[opensuse] Password Wierdness
OS: OpenSuSE 10.3 When I try to invoke YaST from KDE as a non-root user, it prompts me for the root password but always says it is incorrect but I can bring up a terminal screen, su - and it accepts the same password just fine OR I can swithc to a character screen and login as root just fine using the same password. What causes this strange behavior (which I have not experienced from SuSE 9.0 until 10.3)? What can I do about it? well, until you figure it out, su to root and run yast from there. It's not optimal, but it will work. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Acually three is a school of thought that says it is optimal. But I seem to remember a great long thread about this very issue some months back. There was a patch. So first advice is to apply all updates. -- ----------JSA--------- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

may be some sort of character set/ case set different from console or kde open some kde win dow (alt F2, for example) and type in your pass to see how it's typed jdd -- Jean-Daniel Dodin Président du CULTe www.culte.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi, I observed long time ago that keyboard map could be set differently on the X server and on VT or terminal under X. Dont know if its still true (was during the XFree era). Did you check that ? This could explain why a password is correct on a terminal and not on a log window. Have you changed any settings for sudo recently? What happens if you type *your* password at the KDE prompt? -- Don -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This could happen if you use the unpatched sudo module in YaST which had a bug at release whereby it would no longer work with the target password. You could try the following command which would switch kdesu to use su instead of sudo and see if it rectifies the problem: kwriteconfig --file kdesurc --group super-user-command --key super-user-command su -- Benjamin Weber -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi Benji, in case you haven't sorted your problem out yet, try http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2008-04/msg00861.html It looks like your problem. Regards Dave P -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
