[opensuse] recommended WiFi cards
Hi all, I am struggling with WiFi cards and WPA2. I tried with a Fritz!WLAN USB stick (with drivers from AVM, or using ndiswrapper) and a D-Link AirPlus DWL-650+ PCMCIA card (with Madwifi driver) with OpenSUSE 10.3, Ubuntu 7.10 & 8.04. With all, WEP works. When using WPA2, wpa-supplicant needs to be installed. None of the cards work with it. With the Fritz!WLAN USB the radio gets on, it sees the SSID automatically, but no connection is made when I enter the key. wpa-supplicants loaded and is apparently working, after editing the config file. With the D-Link AirPlus DWL-650+ PCMCIA card the system crashes/freezes when wpa-supplicants is loaded to authenticate. Only a reset works. I am using a Medion/Gerycom Blockbuster Xcellent Series Notebook. Blockbuster Xcellent-255TI3 http://download.gericom.com/NOTEBOOK/Win98-Win2k-WinXP/Blockbuster%20Xcellen... Can anyone suggest a reliable card (USB or PCMCIA) that also does WPA2? I have looked at the HCL at OpenSUSE for a card, but it is not very helpful regarding WPA2. With the A-Link WL54USB, WPA and PSK is mentioned to work well (WPA2 I presume). Anyone know where it can be purchased in Germany? The suggested NIC should also be ready for OpenSUSE 11. Most WiFi cards did not work immediately in the past with new OpenSUSE releases. TIA :-) Al -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'm using an Airlink101 Model ASLL3055 which has the 10 dbi antenna. It's USB and uses the zd1211 drivers and firmware which are freely available. I've used it on WEP and WPA without a problem. Once setup via Yast it hooks up using wifimanager. Obviously without the firmware it wont "just work," but once the firmware is in /var/lib/firmware, it does. We've been using it for the past year or so traveling around the country. Occasionally something will kick us off the net and we'll have to do a rcnetwork restart but mostly it just works. I have 3 different wireless lans all operating WPA not WPA2, but I have had good luck with the Atheros cards using the madwifi driver. I have run into a few hicupps between madwifi releases, but the madwifi devs do a good job promptly fixing anything that breaks. This has only occurred a total of 2 days since December 2004. Don't know why your D-link is giving you trouble. Another note, making sure you have a proper wpa_supplicant.conf really helps. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E. Thanx Richard and David for responding. Richard, your the Airlink101 products do not seem to be available in Germany or the UK. I see in the US at Amazon.com an AirLink AWLL6080 http://www.amazon.com/Airlink-Wireless-Adapter-Notebook-AWLL6080/dp/B0017GPJPC/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5?ie=UTF8&s=miscellaneous&qid=1210835527&sr=8-5 N & G, which may be a good piece; any experiences with it? I sent Airlink101 a mail asking about availability in the EU. http://www.amazon.com/Airlink-Wireless-Adapter-Notebook-AWLL6080/dp/B0017GPJPC/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5?ie=UTF8&s=miscellaneous&qid=1210835527&sr=8-5 Maybe AirLink is sold under a different name here. (If I buy from the US, I will probably have guarantee problems if it is defective; EU laws only cover EU sales and enforces guarantees from EU companies). David, I have been using different wpa_supplicant.conf files as in the sample and one with the bare minimum entries, but no chance. Do you have a sample of one that works? The Atheros chipset is used in TP-Link, Netgear and D-Link (mine also). If I could only find out why it freezes the system. I didn't see anything in the /var/log/messages file about it when it crashed, but will try again. Maybe also the wpa-supplicants.conf file? In the meantime, I will try to use WEP and allow only known MAC addresses. :-) Al -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Al, I havent had any experience with the AWLL6080 card, I did Google for it and found on some Ubuntu forum that it will work with the NetAir101MIMO.inf and ndiswrapper but it seems many have a big problem getting it ot work easily. You might want to find the list that tells what chipsets are used in various network cards. I dont have a url handy so I cant help in that regard. Maybe someone else has it handy. Sure, Here is my wpa_supplicant.conf that I use on my laptop that has 3 separate blocks for the 3 separate networks I routinely use: 23:15 Rankin-P35a~> cat /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf update_config=1 #run directory (can set group as well) ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant #set to 1 if frames dropped eapol_version=2 # default 1 (0,1,2) ap_scan=2 network={ # disabled=0 id_str="skyline" ssid="skyline" # mode=0 priority=4 key_mgmt=WPA-PSK auth_alg=OPEN pairwise=TKIP group=TKIP proto=WPA proto=RSN psk=******f48549f4a1838a5ceff4f1dd1d4a8a0c98317bc31f3b698b13b5****** } network={ # disabled=0 id_str="work" ssid="rbpllc" # mode=0 priority=3 key_mgmt=WPA-PSK auth_alg=OPEN pairwise=TKIP group=TKIP proto=WPA proto=RSN psk=******86b5e2bad748e96330fbadbde9f82cfb4f541f7a461e398fb82a****** } network={ # disabled=0 id_str="lake" ssid="lakehouse" # mode=0 priority=2 key_mgmt=WPA-PSK auth_alg=OPEN pairwise=TKIP group=TKIP proto=WPA proto=RSN psk=******4af1f0eda8f6a1faf0f81de168009f0376a3a1bfbc675994b345****** } 23:40 Rankin-P35a~> -- David C.
