I agree that SuSE needs to advance but with the help of American companies not being purchased by them. I think the best way that American companies can help SuSE (or any other company in this same venue) is to provide financial investment, technical and development suport.
Totally. That's one of the things that attracted me to SuSE. They made money. They sold a product (whether some people hated it or not) and made money selling a well put-together desktop/server Linux distro. And since they were foreign I guess I had the misguided impression that this would be how they would continue to function on into the future, forever. Amen. And now it's shattered. American hypergreed is in the picture and who knows what will happen from a technical perspective. And who knows if they'll even offer a desktop any longer.
Some of this has been done but many companies still have fear of Microsoft retaliation and as a result do not provide any inhouse support for Linux. I think this will only become worse now that SuSE is pushed into obscurity by a company that has been beaten out on several fronts by Microsoft in the past. This will not instill confidence in these companies to break the strangle hold that Microsoft has on them and support other systems.
Agreed.
The future is uncertain but I see this as a terrible blow to SuSE and the Linux community as a whole. Time will tell if Novell can prove itself capable of handling such a responsiblity. I doubt that they can. I hope I'm wrong.
I don't think you are. It's wild. One day I'm cruising along fine, debating whether to upgrade to SuSE 9 and the next I'm trying to read tea leaves and figure out if I need to once and for all make the jump to FreeBSD. And this is just at a personal level. From the level of looking at the Linux landscape as a whole it's a lot different this week than it was a few weeks ago. That's for sure. The future may be Mandrake on the desktop, as sad as that is. Preston

BTW didn't the German State put some money in SUSE projects? So we are feeding a US company with European taxes. What's next? Rebuilt the mess in Iraq to let renewed Enron suck the petrol? I hope they won't go to Novel. What about moving another slice of knowhow in the trash bin? When will Uni take care of software developent once more so we can cut out greedy pigs? Anyway still 3 alternatives Debian, Gento and MDK... oooh and any of the growing Chinese distros ;) It is time to ask my gf to teach me Cantonese. After all this is is a good chance for SUSE CEO to go to Bahamas for the rest of his life. Business is business. Isn't it? Ask to the huge community of volunteers.

Come on guys. This stuff is ridiculous--not to mention childish. What does SUSE have to do with Iraq??? Let's stay focused. I think it would be great if some of the disallusioned children went to Debian, BSD or something else so the suse linux community can stay positive and focused on making a better product instead of whining about political nonsense. mmm there is one childish thing I really did. Forgetting that there are very good people working at SUSE[*] and well maybe they won't feel that comfort reading all this stuff passing on their heads. But SUSE *fortunately* is just a part of a larger community (that actually include as *contributors* Debian and *BSD and the people behind thousands of other projects) whose main target is writing free good quality software. Since the quality of what I have depends on SUSE's employees working conditions (including the freedom to decide what is the best code to solve a problem and the freedom to release that code to the community) I hope to them the best things on the move. The value of SUSE for us, not for Novell stock holders, is the quality of their developers and their commitment. The reactions you saw on the list as unfortunately emotional as they may seem are the evidence we really apreciate(d?) their work and are scared to miss its quality and the *symbiosis* with the rest of the Free Software community.
