[opensuse] Ctl-Alt-Fn no longer works
Since the recent update, I can no longer use Ctl-Alt-Fn to switch to a text console on my main computer. However, it still works on my ThinkPad. Any idea what might have caused this? Is there a setting somewhere that I can't seem to find? tnx jk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I'm not aware of any such setting. Nor did I have any such problem with the recent upgrade. Have you tried a reboot? After the last update, I found it necessary to reboot to get some things working again, (Network Management settings app couldn't find any interfaces even though they were active and operational). Seems you have to log out and log back in again simply to change sound system backends. Actually, there was a setting in xorg.conf. But that file no longer exists.
Most of what it ever could do it still can do. It's just optional now. If you need it, create it. Another option for simple configs like this is contained in individual sections of xorg.conf as individual files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Same thing here. I now find that rebooting is becoming more and more necessary.

Not so much influence as mentality, what a shame. You used to be able to modify the /etc/group file and *not* have to logout/in for the changes to take effect. Whatever happened to dynamic config files?
I have had these same thoughts myself for some time now......
I agree, unfortunately.

I filed a bugreport (#801865) similar to this but in a vbox, you might make a comment concerning your experience. We have found issuing "rcxdm restart" a work-a-round. I have tried switching to init level 1 and back to 5, but that didn't fix it.
er, somehow I don't see that comparing to: rcxdm restart or: systemctl restart xdm.service ps: no need to comment if not attempting proposed solution. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

But Patrick, a switch to level 1, and back to 5, includes that operation. It does more things, of course, but it also does that. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Init 1 takes the system to a very minimal level, with no desktop or networking.

I just tried that now and it did work, though the main desktop has shifted from Ctl-Alt-F7 to F8. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I was going to suggest rebooting. Interesting... booting is indeed neceary sometimes. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. R. Yes, the point is restarting xdm. Once you quit xdm (init 1) you loose what you gained by "rcxdm restart". This is *not* a solution, but a work-a-round/?cludge?. And the *next* time you boot, you may/probably will experience the same problem. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

FWIW -- I've noticed this too -- thought it might be some random display problem since I get no display if I boot with framebuffer support. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
