Seems you have to log out and log back in again simply to change sound system backends. Its like the Microsoft influence has started sneaking into Linux.
Not so much influence as mentality, what a shame. You used to be able to modify the /etc/group file and *not* have to logout/in for the changes to take effect. Whatever happened to dynamic config files?
I have had these same thoughts myself for some time now......
