Hi John,
I have attached a screenshot of the vlc I have installed. I don't think it is the same as yours - have a look.
I know that in the past the only version which plays normally is the one which comes from packman - and both my vlc and vlc-codecs come from links2linux (ie packman).
I suggest that you uninstall (using YaST, delete them) vlc and vlc-codecs and then add the packman repo (if you haven't done so already) and re-install vlc.
There may be another reason why you are having hassles: there is some file still hanging around in your home directory (you would need to look for yourself where it may be (?.config?) and which one it is. Delete it.
And while on this point, have you tried creating a new user, adding him to the group 'video', and see if "he" also has this hassle. If not then it is some file hanging around in your home directory.
Basil Sorry, lost the forum in one of those replies... My VLC & VLC-Codecs version is identical to yours - and both from packman. Have created a new user and added to video - same result - won't play

BTW, you are mixing privately sent mail to you with public mail - which is a no-no. Re your problem, I am wondering if you have checked the settings in vlc? For example, I use vlc to watch TV and if I want to record a program I have to deselect the option "Prefer native stream recording", which is the end of the Input/Codecs settings otherwise no recording is made. Last question: I mentioned that you could have some remnants of old files hanging around in your home directory - but I didn't ask you which version of oS you are running, and how did you get to it: a clean install or thru an upgrade. I had mentioned the possibility of having a rogue file in the home directory and suggested that you create a new user and see if the problem is still occurring, You did this and said that the result was the same. BUT, now that you are re-installed vlc from scratch (possibly eliminating a problem with the copy of vlc), does a new user with this re-installed vlc still have the problem? (It's all a matter of starting off with "a level playing field" and eliminating variables one by one until the solution to a problem is pinpointed.) snip the problem) and reinstalled, and also selected the Packman repo in Yast and switched packages. snip Re your problem, I am wondering if you have checked the settings in vlc? Nope, have never changed any settings in VLC - has always 'just worked' in the past..

Always do a complete 'fresh' install when I update, but use the same 'home'. but, as I said, it has worked since the last reinstall.

Yep, realize that as I work in IT as well. :-) By the way, thanks for your persistence with this, appreciate the help! Has me confused... My thinking was maybe a wayward codec, or similar, but then it works using mplayer from the command line.... hmmm.
