nvidia vs ati proprietary linux drivers
Dear SUSE users: I want to buy a new graphics card and have difficulties which one to buy, ATI or NVIDIA based card. Currently I have Nvidia GeForce MX400 and I am satisfied with it. I think nvidia's linux driver is pretty good. Earlier I also had ATI Radeon 7000 but is not supported by proprietary ATI drivers. What I would ike to know how stable and reliable the proprietary ATI linux driver. Also would like to know which one is easier to configure for TV out and which has better TV out properties/quality - but this latter probably depends on the model too. Any opinion and help is appreciated! Thanks, IG ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Kisbabád lesz? Kisbabád született? FWIW, we have had no problems with that driver on x86-64 laptops with Radeon Mobility 9700 (I think) graphics. Last time I tried it, it was marginally harder to configure than the nVIDIA one, but only marginally, and that was a while ago now. -- Bill
Them'r fighting words... heheh That has been debated so many times on this list, I hope you can get what your looking for. Presonally, I like nVidia. They seemed to have support faster for linux, and better for installs. I like the unified driver. Even as an aside from Linux, I have a very bad taste in my mouth for them for windows drivers. I can't tell you how many times I've looked for a driver for one of their cards but couldn't determine what the card was, even though I had it in my hands. No matching serial numbers, no matching model numbers for different drivers, etc... With nVidia, it just works. One driver for all cards regardless of who manufactured it. So, you get a cheap card with an nVidia chipset, and poorly implemented driver? No problem, pop onto nVidia's site and use theirs. I have insisted on all nVidia for all laptop / desktop for years have have not EVER regretted it. At gaming conferences, you can actually talk to them. ATI wouldn't even give me a minute. (Cost them $$$$ for our manufacturing line using PC hardware) TV-out seems relatively easy. VIVO has even worked in Linux. B-) On Wednesday 12 October 2005 9:21 am, Istvan Gabor wrote:

You don't need the proprietary drivers for the 7000 and 7500 cards - they're fully supported, 3D and all, by XFree/X.Org. For situations where cutting edge 3D performance isn't required but good solid OpenGL is, I still recommend one of these cards. In fact, I still use a 7000 in my workstation.
What I would ike to know how stable and reliable the proprietary ATI linux driver. I have a Gigabyte Radeon 9250. Installing the driver was hardly a hassle at all, and it works really well.

In my experience I have had much better results with the proprietary drivers, I run ATi on mylaptop with Xorg and Nvidia on my PC at home and the results are comparable. Nvidia is by far the easiest Suse practically does it for you. Chad

I have both brands. NVIDIA seems to get the edge for OpenGL and hence Linux, while RADEON works faster with DirectX. The RADEON drivers, however, seem to optimize the OpenGL display lists better in my opinion, giving a "smoother" rendering of large, 3D objects, say, in a CAD environment. But the optimization causes the driver to be a little sluggish whenever you are changing the graphics scene and need to update the display lists. If you (or anyone else) wants to email me privately, I can send a chart with my performance observations for 3D rendering of models with hundreds of thousands of facets. Thanks, IG I have an ATI 9600XT and I think the hardware in the card is very nice, the drivers on the other hand.... I have had both nVidia and ATi cards and on

ATi has been known to be sluggish in the Linux driver support arena. As one poster pointed out earlier ATi is heavily into DirectX and M$ market share coupled therein, nVidia however has been behind Linux for many more years than ATi. It's not until recently (much so by comparison with nV) that ATi has made an installer for Linux. Many of the drivers higher features had to be specifically compiled at build time with ATi drivers. nV has had an installer for some time now. The other thing that bothers me is that ATi's config scripts (fglrx_config, or something like that) wants to write the X config to XF86Config-4 and not the generic XF86Config file (I believe Deb systems still use the "-4" file). Now you can save this file the generic X config file (like I did in my root dir) and then replace the /etc/X/XF86Config file, but it makes it a bit awkward overall. I have to say in all fairness that it seems that ATi is finally writing some decent Linux drivers. The latest version seems stable and feature full (at least compared to previous versions). The SaX2 config is ok, but not very good with dual monitors. Though the fglrx config does set up two monitors as one large one rather well IMHO. If you want a proven track record I would suggest nVidia. The reason is because it remains to be seen if ATi will continue to develop drivers at the level and pace they seem to have stepped up to. NVidia has been more consistant, though ATi does put out some nice cards! Cheers, Curtis. -- Spammers Beware: Tresspassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again!
