You don't need the proprietary drivers for the 7000 and 7500 cards - they're fully supported, 3D and all, by XFree/X.Org. For situations where cutting edge 3D performance isn't required but good solid OpenGL is, I still recommend one of these cards. In fact, I still use a 7000 in my workstation.
What I would ike to know how stable and reliable the proprietary ATI linux driver. I have a Gigabyte Radeon 9250. Installing the driver was hardly a hassle at all, and it works really well.
