Hello, Would you please check the following to see if this would be the correct procedure to get a small server up and running with the kernel optimised for an Athlon T-Bird?? I ask because I am not having too much joy here - the initial installation works fine, the optimisation does not. (As I was playing around with different permutations I did not record the exact errors, related mostly to PAM ... mumble mumble) Procedure: New machine, DFI AK75-EC mobo, 256MB RAM, 1.2G T-Bird, IBM 40GB IDE, blah blah. Install 7.2 Prof, 'Default System' YAST2 -> Software -> Install/Remove -> zall -> kernel-sources -> OK cd /usr/src/linux make cloneconfig {to create .config ??} make xconfig -> load .config file -> change ONLY the CPU settings to Athlon/Duron -> Save and exit make dep make bzImage make install make modules {is this necessary as no modules change ??} make modules_install TIA *** If you find a solution and become attached to it, the solution may become your next problem. *** Powered by SuSE Linux 7.2 Professional Registered Linux User Lourens Steenkamp Republic of South Africa _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Well, don't you want the modules to be compiled with processor optimizations?
make modules_install
Looks correct to me? What was it that didn't work? Did you run lilo after the install, btw? regards Anders

I noticed that the last messages from 'make install' appeared to be from lilo adding Linux/SuSE/etc so I did not run it again. It also copies System.map to /boot. I have just done a complete rebuild, etc, after running diags on the h/w. I also set the BIOS to LBA (not auto), used only ext2 (used reiserfs on all but /boot before), did not do 'make modules' / 'make modules_install'. Here are the error messages that I can see, these are unfortunately not the first messages, difficult to see as the fly past and are not logged in /var/log/messages: Segmentation fault Bad swap file entry 080c6118 and more of the same then swap_free : Trying to free nonexistent swap-page then Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer deference at virtual address 00000000 printing eip: c012b826 *pde = 00000000 Oops: 0002 CPU: 0 EIP: 0010:[<c012b826>] EFLAGS: 00010282 then displays registers ... Baffled. Booting the Previous 686 kernel or the SuSE kernel still works fine.
