SuSE 8 is great! a few questions
When I first read about SuSE 8 in this list, I was afraid to try it because of the many complaints including lack of Yast1. Then in one weak moment, I decided to buy 8.0. Right away I ran into trouble when the install hung at the braille display search. The one negative thing I could say is that the SuSE install support is useless. I telephoned and sent the e-mail that the tech requested but never got an answer. People from this list helped me though and I finally got SuSE 8.0 installed. Now that I have seen it for myself, I can say that I am truly impressed. 7.x was a nice improvement over 6.x but 8.0 seems to be a great improvement over previous versions. I knew that there had been some changes in the firewall and masquerading so I was not looking forward to getting that set up again after moving from 7.1. Searching the SuSE support site for some form of help or howto was a waste of time but finally I just looked at the package description for susefirewall2 and realized that it was now set up from Yast2. I can't believe what a change from previous versions. IT was so easy and I had the firewall set up in only a minute and it actually worked! I also wanted to get an ftp server working and Apache but I couldn't find much info on that either. Once again this list came through. I posted a question about ftp and was told to set in inetd which is in Yast2. The answer to getting Apache up was in the list archive. Again Yast2 was the answer. For me, it seems that SuSE 8.0 with Yast2 has been the greatest advance that SuSE has ever made. Even the install was nice. I liked das schöne mädchen von seite eins (from a funny German song) at about 60% of the first disc install. Watch out Gates, Linux is getting to the point where I might even be able to convince my father who is in his 70s to use Linux. Now I have a few questions. 1. While I was looking for help on the firewall question, I was looking through the SuSE help center. I clicked on the contents tab, chose Installation/Hardware then HOWTOs english and received an error message saying unable to run the command specified. the file or directory file:/usr/share/doc/howto/en/html/HOWTO-INDEX.html does not exist What is wrong with that? 2. While looking in inetd throug Yast2 in order to setup the ftp daemon, I saw two lines for ftp. Why 2? Am I supposed to start both or are they two different programs from which I must choose 1? 3. When I use Yast2 to change the color of the desktop, I get the color I want but when I restart the computer, those changes are gone. Why? 4. I still haven't figured out an easy way to put shortcuts to my favorite programs on the desktop. I know how to create a shortcut and enter info about the application including the executable but I want a simple way to get a shortcut from the program icon. When I click the menu and go to a submenu where I see an app that I want to run, I want to be able to copy that to the desktop like I do with Windows (sorry for mentioning the evil empire). Have you tried just dragging the item from the menu to the desktop and then select copy? This works for me. Same for dragging programs to the kicker at the bottom of the desktop. Neal
On a related note. Why doesn't the k menu show all the newly installed groups. If i right click on it and go to edit I can see for example my wine and crossover groups, but they do not show up in the actual menu and anything i add will not show up either. bjz -----Original Message----- From: neal mcdermott [mailto:neamcd@arczip.com] Sent: Friday, June 21, 2002 3:39 PM To: Damon Register; SuSE Linux Subject: Re: [SLE] SuSE 8 is great! a few questions On Friday 21 June 2002 20:00, Damon Register wrote:

Go to Control Center>Look & Feel>Menu Settings. It will probably be set to Suse Menu. Select Standard KDE Menu and apply. Then you should see them. The origional Suse menu will now be a sub-menu. Personally, I don't understand why the Suse Menu. I like the organization of it, but new apps don't appear on it, and you have to manually configure it. Anyone know why it is set up like this? If you want to configure something the YaST2 firewall module does not cover you'll have to use one of the Ultimate Expert Configuration Tools: a text editor. <snip>

That's a bug. The correct link is "file:/usr/share/doc/howto/en/html/HOWTO-INDEX/index.html". Maybe someone else knows what file(s) to edit to correct the link? It's also in the help system under http://localhost/.
2. While looking in inetd throug Yast2 in order to setup the ftp daemon, I saw two lines for ftp. Why 2? Am I supposed to start both or are they two different programs from which I must choose 1?
Depends on the ftp-daemon program that you use. Choose only 1. Also search for ftpd in the SDB (1 article).
3. When I use Yast2 to change the color of the desktop, I get the color I want but when I restart the computer, those changes are gone. Why?
What YaST2 module? (You can also run a YaST module from the Control Center)

Just Drag them off the KDE-menu and drop them on the desktop (Left Mouse Button). A small dialog pops up. Choose copy. IIRC more or less the same as in Windows (except for that dialog). Leen

The file you are talking about above. /usr/share/doc/howto/en/html/HOWTO-INDEX.html You need to create it, you don't have it (because it does not exist (says the error message above)) It's content, like Togan said, should be: <HTML> <META HTTP-EQUIV="REFRESH" CONTENT="0;URL=HOWTO-INDEX/index.html"> </HTML> I modified like Togan said and it works great (thanks Togan) Cheers, Dan.
I hope I am not accused of being a grouch--I love this list--but the following exchange seems to me to be useless, except possibly to Damon Register? Or to . . . ? --doug At 07:16 06/24/2002 -0400, Damon Register wrote:

It wasn't useless to me or to Dan Laba and possibly to others who wanted to know but didn't actually post the question. Isn't helping people use SuSE Linux what this list is for? Damon Register
