I knew that there had been some changes in the firewall and masquerading so I was not looking forward to getting that set up again after moving from 7.1. Searching the SuSE support site for some form of help or howto was a waste of time but finally I just looked at the package description for susefirewall2 and realized that it was now set up from Yast2. I can't believe what a change from previous versions. IT was so easy and I had the firewall set up in only a minute and it actually worked!
If you want to configure something the YaST2 firewall module does not cover you'll have to use one of the Ultimate Expert Configuration Tools: a text editor. <snip>
Watch out Gates, Linux is getting to the point where I might even be able to convince my father who is in his 70s to use Linux.
Now I have a few questions. 1. While I was looking for help on the firewall question, I was looking through the SuSE help center. I clicked on the contents tab, chose Installation/Hardware then HOWTOs english and received an error message saying unable to run the command specified. the file or directory file:/usr/share/doc/howto/en/html/HOWTO-INDEX.html does not exist What is wrong with that?
That's a bug. The correct link is "file:/usr/share/doc/howto/en/html/HOWTO-INDEX/index.html". Maybe someone else knows what file(s) to edit to correct the link? It's also in the help system under http://localhost/.
2. While looking in inetd throug Yast2 in order to setup the ftp daemon, I saw two lines for ftp. Why 2? Am I supposed to start both or are they two different programs from which I must choose 1?
Depends on the ftp-daemon program that you use. Choose only 1. Also search for ftpd in the SDB (1 article).
3. When I use Yast2 to change the color of the desktop, I get the color I want but when I restart the computer, those changes are gone. Why?
What YaST2 module? (You can also run a YaST module from the Control Center)
4. I still haven't figured out an easy way to put shortcuts to my favorite programs on the desktop. I know how to create a shortcut and enter info about the application including the executable but I want a simple way to get a shortcut from the program icon. When I click the menu and go to a submenu where I see an app that I want to run, I want to be able to copy that to the desktop like I do with Windows (sorry for mentioning the evil empire).
Just Drag them off the KDE-menu and drop them on the desktop (Left Mouse Button). A small dialog pops up. Choose copy. IIRC more or less the same as in Windows (except for that dialog). Leen
