I know that I am asking this again, but since I did not have anyone anwser I would try again. I have a issue with some fonts not being rendered by the system correctly. In Gimp, the program can see the names of the fonts but will not render them. I installed the freetype plugin and it can render all the fonts correctly. This is odd. The same issue rears it head with using a program with wine. The program sees the fonts but doesn't render them all. I think that it has something to do with how X renders the fonts. OO.org renders the fonts correctly. I'm stuck! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get this to work? I thought that it might have been some of the new fonts that I added to the system. I removed them and the ones that come with SuSE render fine with Gimp but, in the app that is running with Wine, It still will not render the fonts correctly. Sorry that this is a duplicate of the question that I have already asked but this little issue is driving me up the wall. Any pointers will be appreciated! -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

www.usr-local-bin.org Grab the new Gimp 1.3.x packages. They rock. I really like them. They are compiled with GTK2 and if you run the gnome-settings-daemon in the background then not only do they see all the fonts but the program actually looks nice as well. I installed the 1.3.x packages a month ago and they've not given me any issue at all. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

Ben, I will give this a shot! Thanks for the suggestion. You have given me a few more things that I can check for to try and narrow down the problem. Thanks! . -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Well I installed the new Gimp packages and now the fonts do not show up. (the new fonts that is) Do I have to run the fonts module of SuSEconfig even though I have issued the appropriate xset commands? For example "xset +fp /home/marshall/Fonts" and then "xset fp rehash". I thought that the above commands would make the fonts available in the directories available to X? Did something change where I cannot dynamically set fonts in this manner? (Slightly OT) BTW, boy has Gimp got a facelift with this new version. I like the new changes. -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Not sure if something changed as far as setting what fonts are available. I stick all my fonts in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts and add them to my XF86Config file..then run SuSEconfig to make sure everything is good. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org ----- If two men agree on everything, you can be sure that only one of them is doing the thinking.

Ok I will do that and see then if the fonts show up. I was just hoping though that I could do it dynamically. -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Well I installed some fonts in the same manner as you did Ben and now Gimp will pickup on the new fonts. Some other fonts are causing Gimp to error out but Gimp will now render the added in fonts! Now it is on the why wine is still not wanting to cooperate. One down and one to go. -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Yes, you need the part of it which runs fc-cache. See also the man page of 'fonts-config' which is the script run by 'SuSEconfig --module fonts'. It explains in detail what it does.
even though I have issued the appropriate xset commands?
For example "xset +fp /home/marshall/Fonts" and then "xset fp rehash".
That is only relevant when X11 core fonts are used. But a GTK2 application doesn't do that anymore, it uses only Xft2/fontconfig.
I thought that the above commands would make the fonts available in the directories available to X? Did something change where I cannot dynamically set fonts in this manner?
Xft2/fontconfig works differently.

Thanks Mike for the explanation.:) Now onto the issue with wine not playing nice with the fonts. -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."

Thanks John but I asked for help not for an english tutorial. I did not think that I was going to have the english police breathing down my throat! I have seen post on this list that looked worse than mine and now I see that I have become a target for paper writing. I can understand nettiquite but this is ridiculous! ./RANT I have seen this list change alot since joining when I got 7.3. There is ALOT more AGGRESSION twards people! Especially newbies. Well it looks like a community that does this WILL INDEED FAIL!!! Come on people! This is a list and we use email to try and converse what issues that we are having with our system not to be graded on content or flow! If you are in doubt, then ask the poster and not with this type of resopnse. If the person who gave me the link would have asked for clarification, I would have given it. I thought that the question that I asked was clear. Needless aggression will not help the Linux cause. It will hurt it terribly! Case in point. A person asks for help and get's an anwser like the one above. What is he/she going to think? I am guessing that the person will be thinking that the people on the list are a bunch of stuck-up snobs and I'm not going to get any help. So screw this! I'll keep on using this OS! I was under the assumption that this list was here to help with Linux issues, not slam people down. Guess that I was wrong. I have received help on this list quite a few times. I guess that the times have changed. Sorry about this but I guess that with people like this, someone is bound to get his/her cookies burned! Ctrl-C I will see about using Ben's suggestion by installing the new version of Gimp and see if this gets me anywhere. -- Marshall "Nothing is impossible, we just do not have all the anwsers to make the impossible, possible."
