Not sure if something changed as far as setting what fonts are available. I stick all my fonts in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts and add them to my XF86Config file..then run SuSEconfig to make sure everything is good.
Well I installed some fonts in the same manner as you did Ben and now Gimp will pickup on the new fonts. Some other fonts are causing Gimp to error out but Gimp will now render the added in fonts!
