[opensuse] Firefox "open with Package Installer" failure
Hi openSUSErs, Would like to know if somebody else is facing same problem as me attempting to install a rpm package from Firefox. For example, trying to install a new version of VirtualBox by clicking on the rpm link, opens correctly Package Installer but the process fails to an error message stating that process has been interrupted by the user. Anybody have same issue? I am using openSUSE 12.2. Hi Marco, What do you mean by "the rpm link"? Has it been specifically packaged for use on an openSUSE 12.2 system, or is it a generic package? regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Carl, In the case mentioned it is a generic RPM package. More especifically it is the latest VirtualBox RPM package. Cheers, Marco -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

'Generic' packages need to be evaluated on a case by case basis. It is usually much better to obtain one that has been packaged for your exact distribution and release. Have you tried the openSUSE package search?: http://software.opensuse.org/package/virtualbox hth & regards, Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Carl, Your answer doesn't match with my question which is related to something wrong inside the configuration of mine, or possibly others openSUSE-12.2 file-type management from FireFox. Rgds,
Probably due to the language barrier, Marco. I never install 'generic' rpm packages using Firefox. Not ever. :-) Have fun! Carl -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The <problem> probably stems from ymp files being missing for <generic> rpms rather than a "configuration" problem of his. I can count the times I have used firefox to install rpm files on one hand, much simpler to dl and install locally. -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://linuxcounter.net -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I am using the same package. Download the rpm to a local filesystem. sudo zypper in /path-to/VirtualBox-4.2-4.2.6_82870_openSUSE114-1.x86_64 works for me package is labled for 11.4 but works on all > 11.4. Rajko, Your several explanations have been useful enough to understand the problem. Then if the "guilty" is Apper, "we" should have the equivalent package manager for Gnome which could be started within Firefox by clicking on the RPM link or even better "we" should have a corrected Apper. I use 99,9% Gnome but I have also KDE as alternative desktop and I see that this mix is not working as expected. Manual RPM installation also works flawlessly for me, but I would like a faster way to do the same thing! It is using Apper and Apper is using PackageKit that has a shim layer to libzypp (PackageKit-backend-zypp), and that one was source of many problems. In other words one needs all updates offered trough regular update channel. System is updated and KDE is Platform Version 4.9.4 "release 5". Not sure about Gnome side, though.
For example, trying to install a new version of VirtualBox by clicking on the rpm link, opens correctly Package Installer but the process fails to an error message stating that process has been interrupted by the user.
No issues here, but I'm patient with Apper and its shim layers :) It is slow process comparing to zypper. With only feedback in form of a completion bar indicator that stay at almost done for a while, users could be tempted to press Continue button more then once, which may bring "interrupted by the user". I can't know that as I was waiting for error to appear on its own, and VBox installation ended with success. With exception of well known downloads, like VBox, I don't use direct installation from the web, so I don't have another package to try. BTW, package is not really generic, it is for few openSUSE releases, but it is openSUSE, not "for rpm based distros" which usually means based on Fedora, and likely incompatible with SUSE. The one that you can find following Carl's suggestion, is OSS version with support for USB 1.1. In other words external USB drives will be very slow. I'm not aware of any other differences, and depending on your use case, that version could be all you need. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
