I am running XFree 4.0.1. I don't see how I can install VMWare tools if my VMWare experience lasts about 500 ms.
Scott
I suppose you are right about that. I suspect that it is XFree 4 because on my system as VMWare starts, the screen flashes to full screen with a message that it is testing the Xserver. Yours obviously is not finding a satisfactory server. What graphics card do you have? Did you have a choice of drivers to use? (My ATI Expert 2000 will run on xrage.rpm or r128, the later is far superior.) There are also several notes under Troubleshooting on the VMWare.com site. There are numerous support documents also. Ed, I somehow managed to get VMWare running. How do I point the system at the Win98 floppy image on my hard disk to install the Tools? Do I need to dd it to a floppy (or cp it, and if so what filesystem should the floppy be formated under?) Scott <p><p>>
Scott,
At www.xfree.org/4.0.1/Status2.html, the 3Dfx Voodoo is supported by tdfx driver, or Glide2x driver where glide is available. I have no idea what glide is.
tdfx is available at /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers as tdfx_drv.o, with docs at /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/doc/html/tdfx.4.html.
To load, look at /etc/X11/XF86Config, under Section "Device". It should be referenced on the Driver line as: Driver "tdfx". Also identifier line should be: Identifier "Device[0]". Make sure that Device[0] is referred to in Section "Screen" on a line like: Device "Device[0].
That should get the right driver started when X initiates.
Good Luck. VMWare is a marvelous solution to having WinX.

Short answer is no, you don't need to dd floppy image onto diskette. The longer answer is http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/common/install_tools.html HTH, -Kastus

When I first got VMWare (commercial version), it was at 2.0 and I did have to put the floppy image on a diskette and boot the VM from it. I have since upgraded through 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 to 2.0.3, and it is no longer necessary to do so. So, I guess it depends on which version comes with SuSE 7.0 (I think that is where you originally said you got VM). In the later versions, you just start the vmware window, click Settings, enable VMWare Tools Install. When you Power On the guest system, it boots from the floppy image on your HD and installs the Tools. I think Tools is automatically loaded from that point forward and shows up as an icon on the Win98 task bar. It makes much higher resolutions possible, plus there are other tools available from the Icon for selecting VMWare behavior, Device Control, etc. Ed Harrison SuSE 6.4, Kernel 2.2.17, IBM JDK 1.1.8 (20000713) PBM 1.1.18

When you click on the VMware-tools-install, it will ask you if you want to see the instructions for installing the tools and Xserver. I would suggest reading them, as you will need to untar them and cp them to /tmp after first mounting the /dev/fd0. The instructions are very straight forward. I have since written them down so I can refer to them when necessary, as I can never remember squat! ;-) After installation, kill X and re-login and voila', the VM Xserver will kick in and your mouse will be able to leave the VM after you call up vmware-toolbox. I usually put it my autostart folder so I don't have to remember to bring them up. It's a great program. I have used it since its infancy for playing with different OS's without jeopardizing my system. BTW, the version that comes with SuSE works as above. Remember to run vmware-config (?) before initializing a virtual machine. Hope you don't mind my jumping in here. Have fun! -- TRBishop tb64710@ltec.net RLU#12043 SuSE 7.0Pro

I am using the 3dfx 3500 TV which works great under XFree and Accelerated X. Maybe I should try Accelerated X with VMWare.

Well, I just fiddled with the configuration again and lo and behold, vmware came up! SO.... do I need to copy the disk image /usr/lib/vmware/floppies/win98 (or whatever) to a floppy with dd to install the vmware tools or is there a trick to redirect to the file on my HD? BTW, has anyone successfully displayed the vmware.pdf file of the vmware docs? I downloaded from VMWare and the file is like 6 megs but the KDE viewer shows it's one page with no contents. I think I tried Acroread as well but I don't remember if it worked (this was a few weeks ago, the dialog here reawakened my interest in getting VMWare to run, thanks!)
If you mean vmware_2_support_en.pdf (582 pages, ~6 megs), it opens with no problems in Acroread 4 on SuSE 7. -Kastus

This points the VM to a floppy disk image on the host from which it will boot and load the SVGA driver for the VM.
First of all thanks for all the info. One final question before I start the fun part. On the Vmware site it does mention your above mentioned VMWARE tools ans it also mentions the following file. vmware-linux-tools.tar.gz Is this file available as an rpm in the SuSE CD or do I have to get it from VMWARE site TIA -- Togan Muftuoglu toganm@turk.net 100% MS FREE Absolutely no component of Microsoft was used in the generation or posting of this e-mail. AFAIK, linux-tools are included in RPM, no need to download/install them separately if you install RPM. -Kastus

Ok Here is the first set of questions I did install vmware ( decided to download from the vmware site so it is the most current one) Created the vmmachine for the guest system being linux. booted the machine and enabled VMTOOLS tarted the installation of Mandrake ( I have to test a keyboard under it so I have to getit up somehow and I do not plan to keep it long) The problem is with the X server setup now this is most probably related to VMware. I do have Matrox G400 DH SD3 2MB which currently runs like a charm unders SuSE using 4.01 the mga_drv.o is from matrox site (beta 1.0.3 IIRC) Now under Vmware what is my graphic card when I choose G400 DH with 32MB the xconfiguration of mandrake starts shouting that it is not correct. Do I choose a generic SVGA driver under VMWARE or am I able to use my actual grahic card ? It depends on which VMWare. If it is the current one, the tools are installed as floppy images at /usr/lib/vmware/floppies (file=windows.flp). Installiing the tools is not always necessary to boot up, but they are required for any sort of decent screen resolution, and necessary for some graphics cards to work at all. They contain an SVGA driver for the card. The card is detected and tested at startup. Ed Harrison SuSE 6.4, Kernel 2.2.17, IBM JDK 1.1.8 (20000713) PBM 1.1.18
