Hello: This occurs in openSUSE Leap 15.1 with its default cups version (CUPS 2.2.7). I have a HP Laserjet P3015 printer attached to the computer via USB cable. The print queue setup is OK and many times printing occurs without any problem. But occasionally the printer completely freezes when I try to print something. I could not find out yet what causes the printer freezes. When the printer is frozen it doesn't print and even does not respond to any of its buttons. When this occurs the print job is halted and is stored in the print queue:
lpstat -o laserjet-3847 unknown 80896 Tue 10 Aug 2021 11:15:14 AM CEST
lpstat -p printer laserjet now printing laserjet-3847. enabled since Tue 10 Aug 2021 11:15:14 AM CEST Processing page 1...
Here is my problem (apart from the printer freeze): If I restart (switch off and on) the printer, the print job is waiting quite long before printed. Eventually it gets printed but is takes several minutes. I would expect that after restarting the printer the print job is printed immediately. How could I achieve that? In /etc/cups/printers.conf file the ErrorPolicy is set to retry-job for the printer: <Printer laserjet> ... ErrorPolicy retry-job </Printer> Thanks in advance, Istvan

The recomennded driver for your printer is hp-laserjet_p3010_series-ps.ppd.gz.
Have you tried with this driver?

No,.....
As you saw, he used hp utility programs (hp-check, hp-diagnose_plugin, etc.) to find out the cause with reference to sys.log.
Isn't this helpful?
I apologize for the late answer. I set all cups queues with this printer to the recommended driver (hp-laserjet_p3010_series-ps.ppd.gz) and also installed hlip package (earlier I had only hpijs). (I don't know if hplip is really necessary or had effect on fixing the problem, or the recommended driver was sufficient to solve it.) Since then I had no problem like before. I hope it will stay like this. I will check the commands you mentioned. Thank you very much, Istvan

cups-brf is apparently Braille-Ready Format CUPS filter <https://fossies.org/linux/cups-filters/backend/cups-brf.c> My guess is that when the printer freezes, the process talking to it gets also stuck and takes some time (a timeout) to bail out. You could probably kill it, but I don't know if then the job will restart. What I do in similar cases is kill that print job (it should show in "lpq -a"; then "lprm job_nunmber"), then I restart the job from the application that produced it (which allows me to skip the pages already printed). Sometimes the printer doesn't like that print job on a second try, and in that case I change printer driver. For example, my printer: minas-tirith:~ # lpstat -a cp1510n_ps accepting requests since Mon Feb 5 14:13:06 2018 cp1515n_hpijs accepting requests since Tue Mar 9 21:32:13 2010 cp1515n_pcl3 accepting requests since Tue Mar 9 21:43:17 2010 minas-tirith:~ # My printer talks by default postscript (ps), but also hpijs and pcl3. I have one printer defined for each driver. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from oS Leap 15.2 x86_64 (Minas Tirith))
