G'day all When trying to compile the latest lucent winmodem driver I get an error stating 'ltmodem.o was compiled for kernel version 2.4.0 while this kernel is version 2.4.0-4GB'. Is there a way to change the version number ? Regards -- Mark R. Annandale SCN Limited Mobile: +447775853649
I've the same problem when trying to install the lucent modem on my Acer 734 notebook, on both 2.2.18 and 2.4.0 kernel. Even with the help from Chris Reeves, I'm unable to get it to work. : ( Do drop me a note if you found any solution, thanks. Dennis/sg

Hi there I found a thread on the Linmodem discussion list, which has worked for me. Go to /usr/include/linux/version.h There is a line there : #define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.0" Change this to read : #define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.0-4GB" Then run build_ module and ltinst again. I still haven't figured out how to have the module autoload at boot up. It appears to be in modules.conf, but I have to run ./ltinst everytime I reboot. I can then use Kinternet dialler to log onto my ISP. If I use Wvdial or Kinternet to dial, the modem hangs up with error code 16 as soon as the ISP answers. Looking in the pppd man pages states that error code 16 relates to the modem hanging up ??, this didn't help me much. Anyway I have a half working system so will keep plugging away, someone a bit brighter than me hopefully will come up with a solution to the above problems. I hope this helps you a bit. I will keep this in mind but I don't think I'll do it right a way. I've reinstall the notebook three times when playing with the 2.2.18 and 2.4.0 kernel. : ( So I'm a bit lose faith with this lucent modem thing for the moment (no time to reinstall). Maybe at later stage when better solution is available? Thanks anyway. Dennis/sg

The -4GB extension comes from setting the HIGHMEMVERSION="-4GB" in /usr/src/linux/Makefile as a result of setting CONFIG_HIGHMEM4G in your /usr/src/linuc/.config If you don't have 4GB turn it off and recompile your kernel. Beware though doing a modules_install will wipe out any modules that have been added to your modules directory unless you modify the Makefile to not rm the dirs. -- Mark Hounschell dmarkh@cfl.rr.com
