I've installed the Linux version of AOL Instant Messenger (release 1.1.112) and I can't get the sounds that indicate a message has been received or sent. I'm running KDE2, which has a specific section in the Control Center (under System Notifications) for AIM. I can get other system notification sounds to work, but not the ones for AIM. I've checked off the "play sound" option under "you have received a message" and associated a sound with that message. I can even play the sound from the Control Center. But I don't get it when I actually receive a message. Is anyone else using AIM? Do you get the sounds? Paul Abrahams

Paul, I've tried using AOL's AIM for Linux but I wasn't satisfied (and no I was not able to get the sounds working either). I decided to switch to GAIM which I like much better and I suggest that you check it out too. If its not installed with your system you can get it from http://gaim.sourceforge.net Hope this helps... -Peter P.S.: Yes, I am able to use the sounds with GAIM :) -- "Friends don't let friends use Windows"

I downloaded GAIM but couldn't get it to build. Haven't yet tried to figure out what component it wanted. But I do have one concern about it just from looking at the GAIM web page: there seems to be some conflict between the GAIM people and AOL, and AOL has been doing stuff to prevent GAIM from working. Those issues seem to have been resolved, but it's not entirely clear. What's your take on that? Paul Abrahams
