[SLE] 6.4 install via plip interface
Hi everyone, I want to install Suse 6.4 to my HP Omnibook 4000C 486DX 50 16 MB ram notebook. Since the laptop does not have a CDROM drive I wanted to install via plip interface via NFS from the desktop. I read the plip how to and the NFS how to documents and currently I have the NFS and plip interface working on the desktop. Using the boot disk of 6.4 I have booted the laptop. When I want to install the plip module I insert the modules disk choose the plip but nothing happens. If I choose nfs install from the menu it says please load a network module first. How am I supposed to proceed further ant ideas ? -- Togan Muftuoglu toganm@turk.net -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/
Hi Togan, you should have created a modules floppy too and - before proceeding to the choice of the installation medium - inserted the necessary module(s) into the kernel (actually PLIP support and/or support for your interface card). But possibly you will fail. I did something similar yesterday (wanted to install SuSE Linux 6.4 on an 8 MB 486DX via NFS) and came to a point where I was asked to create a swap file manually on the second console (but actually, there was none). A friend of mine mentioned it might have had problems starting the shell ... strange, isn't it? -- Anne -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/

Not necesarry since I have the original package which already has the two ploppies boot and modules

That is the problem point what ever I do nothing happens. I actually don't know about PLIP configuration, but maybe you should consult the support database. Just an idea ...

Maybe you should rethink whether it has to be a 6.4 on this small system -- I would recommend a <= 6.2 an manual upgrades if you really need the newer software. Hi everyone, Ok I tried with the 6.3 boot disk and the modules disk to install via plip interface to my laptop. Contrary to the 6.4 installation 6.3 asks for the plip parameters and the configuration which I enter as follows io=0x378 irq=7 ifconfig plip0 192.168.217.3 pointopoint 192.168.217.2 netmask 255.255.255.255 up but then when I want to do the installation via NFS it say no network modules loaded. Also when I ping the laptop from the desktop nope it does not exists. Is there any other way I should try to install it (ie. with floopies maybe) Togan Muftuoglu wrote:

This sounds like the problem I'm having upgrading my older machine from 5.2 to 6.3. After dying several times it will no longer read the CD-ROM even thought the sbpcd modules are loaded. I'm now trying to d o the install via plip and am having trouble setting up the parallel port
From dmesg I get the following:

Have you checked the rcplip script should be located at /sbin or init.d directory. Also Yast has an option regarding PLIP (at least at the 6.3 and 6.4 Suse versions do not know for 5.2)Also plip how to and nfs how to may help Although I was able to set the plip interface at the desktop using that script The original SUSE floppies' for both 6.3 and 6.4 does not enbale me to do a plip install although the manual says I can Most probably it does not work since installation support is not valid for plip install =:-( I will be watching this thread may be some one shows the way -- Togan Muftuoglu toganm@turk.net 100% MS FREE Absolutely no component of Microsoft was used in the generation or posting of this e-mail. Well I did the following rmmod parport_probe rmmod parport_pc rmmod parport insmod parport 0x378,7 insmod plip and it installed I then ran ifconfig plip0 one pointopoint two up route add two Route shows it there, ifconfig shows the interlace, when I ping two I get no response When yast on two tries to mount the CD-ROM one it also times out It seemed so easy when I set up PLIP on the 486 under 5.1, now this upgrade is starting to annoy me, and it's keeping me from inn and majordomo. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mike Kenzie <KenzieM@sympatico.ca> To: <suse-linux-e@suse.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 05, 2000 1:21 PM Subject: Re: [SLE] 6.4 install via plip interface

Is your /etc/hosts and host.allow configured for up and two also Are rpc.portmap and nfs configured and running ?
When yast on two tries to mount the CD-ROM one it also times out
Well in my case I also receive the message plip0 timed out but at the end I can mount the cdrom from the nfs side and I can get the files from one to two.
