TW: boot problem kernel 5.18.9-2 and higher
Hardware: Dell XPS 8940 11th Gen Intel i7-11700 (16) @ 4.800GHz NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti I'm using latest TW-release with kernel 5.19.0-1-default and NVIDIA driver 515.65.01 installed the hard way. kernel 5.18.9-2 or higher seems to give a (plymouth) problem. The problem doesn't occur with kernel 5.18.9-1-default or lower. Booting up with one of these kernels the plymouth boot screen stops displaying after this line: I915 0000:00:02.0: enabling device (0006 -> 0007) Eventually I get to the KDE login screen. The problem is that I'm using the hard way to install NVIDIA. This makes I can't boot when a new kernel is installed as the boot process ends up with a black screen. Luckely I can access the faulty pc from another pc and install the driver from there. journalctl show me this: Aug 12 18:17:32 dell-desk sddm[1381]: Initializing... Good.
I wonder why I need to set this?
The nomodeset parameter instructs the kernel to not load video drivers and use BIOS modes instead, until X is loaded.
Prior to kernel 15.18.9-2 there was no problem at all.

That's the time of simpledrm having been re-enabled, a major change in graphics handling during boot. Please read this: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Nomodeset:_Work_Around_Graphic_Upgrade_&_Installation_Obstacles Please boot without using nomodeset, and following Ctrl-Alt-F3 and logging in on resulting vtty3, run the following: cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | susepaste and report here the resulting URI. While logged into X after booting using nomodeset, please run the following: inxi -Gaz and copy & paste the command with its output here in your response. Instead of nomodeset it is probable that nosimplefb=1 is needed. <https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1201392> -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Suse-prime is installed but I see no reason why I should use it. The monitor is directly hooked to a displayport of the NVIDIA graphic card. The dell XPS 8940 desktop has 3x DisplayPort 1.4a, 1x HDMI 2.1 ports on the NVIDA card The Dell has also 1 DisplayPort 1.2 and 1 HDMI 1.4. I suppose these are for the Intel graphic card.

Until this, I wasn't aware this was a desktop rather than a laptop. Thus you shouldn't need anything that has to do with Intel graphics, nor should you need prime. You may need a BIOS setting change. BIOS often have bugs. Make sure the PCIe card is preferred over the IGP in the BIOS. More than once in bug reports I have seen a recommendation to NVidia users of NVidia drivers to remove Plymouth. Maybe this is another of those combinations of young components whose support isn't complete or thoroughly debugged, where their /removal/ would be an answer to the problem. Without seeing Xorg.0.log, I'm hard to convince that disabling Plymouth via Grub took effect. Since I never have Plymouth installed, I can't tell whether plymouth=0 or plymouth.enable=0 or plymouth.disable=1 or noplymouth or all of, or some combination of the above, are effective to disable Plymouth via Grub in all contexts. I've never seen a doc on the subject. I only know that linuxrc, for installation, specifies plymouth=0. The Dell has also 1 DisplayPort 1.2 and 1 HDMI 1.4. I suppose these are for the Intel graphic card.
They are. In Martin's case, I believe that until 15.18.9-1, he was working with nouveau, and since 15.18.9-2, nouveau and nvidia's proprietary driver coexist.
As far as I know I always have used NVIDIA's driver. I bought the Dell last year in may. In the beginning with Leap 15.3 and NVIDIA (the easy way). Later on with TW and NVIDIA installed the hard way. AFAIR I couldn't install NVIDIA the easy way on TW. I can be there are some leftover from previous attemps to install NVIDIA the easy way.

Simpledrm has been re-enabled since 15.18.9-1, not 15.18.9-2.

easy to remove as the "easy way" was via rpm.

Were you able to install the NVIDIA driver without the nomodeset setting? I can't think of any but...
Yes the hard way.
Could you tell me what the easy way and the hard way are?
The easy way is via yast or zypper Add the right repository, install the right NVDIA-drivers. For some reason I couldn't use this on TW. Maybe I should try it again. The hard way is via the console (init 3) Download the right driver from NVIDIA, boot into runlevel 3 install the driver sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-515.65.01.run answer a few questions. After install mkinitrd, then reboot. Prior to kernel 5.18..9.2 I could do this without nomodeset, but now I need to set nomodeset as I get a black screen.

There is certainly no mention of nomodeset. The rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau is a setting to avoid loading the nouveau module at startup, and NVIDIA's installer creates a blacklist to avoid conflicts when installing driver. See below.
$cat /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf
I don't have /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf. I do have /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf blacklist.conf contains: blacklist nouveau nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf contains: # generated by nvidia-installer blacklist nouveau options nouveau modeset=0
In your case, the setting "rd.driver.blacklist=nouveau" does not work and I can only assume that the phenomenon is caused by a conflict between the nouveau and NVIDIA drivers.

Is it in a HARD WAY?
Yes indeed the hard way.

18 months isn't new in the PC world. Rocket Lake is more than 18 months old, at least one full generation prior to latest. Mine is one of the newer RKLs, yet six quarters old: <https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/212270/intel-core-i511400-processor-12m-cache-up-to-4-40-ghz.html> <https://lists.opensuse.org/archives/list/users@lists.opensuse.org/message/QDSIV5KTTMSJMESJ2DDKSPLZZN7EL2EF/>
To avoid this problem, replace the nomodeset in the kernel parameter with i915.modeset=0.
A normal average desktop PC with PCIe slots and graphics outputs supported by a CPU containing an IGP by default has a BIOS option set to prefer enabling only the add-in GPU if present. It shouldn't be necessary to disable the IGP in software, e.g using i915.modeset=0, but that doesn't mean disabling in software can't or shouldn't work. BIOS vary, and many are buggy. Martin's issue might be affected by updating his UEFI BIOS, or simply making a change to graphics settings in it. I'm guessing we're off the trail here, that i915.modeset=0 isn't going to work, and that this simpledrm/NVidia combo has a software bug, or a BIOS bug triggered by that combination. cf. <https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/intel/-/issues/4762> -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. I had some derivation of G04/G05 installed EARLY on for the Dell which has an Intel iGPU and nvidia T1000. Either due to my misunderstanding or an actual problem (I didn't recognize), I had little to no success with the RPM version of nvidia drivers ~ so I ditched them for .run installs (which I also sign and have secure boot enabled since the laptop is also for use with Windows 11; at worst, sometimes I have to enter the bitlocker recovery key when I boot windows, but I don't lose sleep over it). I don't really care about using the iGPU or switching between them, my goal was to just use the T1000 via the laptop screen (so no external display plugged in as I'd generally ssh to it or use Xpra). My main issue, which had persisted for at least 6mos, was that it'd boot to a black screen (on what I assume was vt7). Using the .run always worked fine (w/o X11 running of course) and I'd `sudo systemctl restart display-manager.service` and be greeted with a lightdm login screen. But subsequent reboots always yielded a black screen. That was solved with a CTRL+ALT+F4, login, `sudo modprobe nvidia_drm` and `sudo systemctl restart display-manager.service` ; Very simple, but I wanted to know why it was always the case. I don't use any extra boot parameters and have these ACTIVE files in: /etc/modprobe.d -- $ /bin/cat nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf # generated by nvidia-installer blacklist nouveau options nouveau modeset=0 $ /bin/cat 50-nvidia-smb.conf options nvidia_drm modeset=1 /usr/lib/modprobe.d -- $ /bin/cat nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf # generated by nvidia-installer blacklist nouveau options nouveau modeset=0 /usr/lib/modules-load.d -- $ /bin/cat nvidia_drm.conf nvidia_drm The '/etc/modules-load.d' directory is empty. The 'prime-select' service always fails to start at boot, but `sudo prime-select get-current` returns 'nvidia': $ sudo prime-select get-current Driver configured: nvidia NVIDIA modules are loaded I also had next to no luck following what bbswitch was actually doing and at one point it'd just completely disable the NVIDIA card; so I've disabled '/usr/lib/modules-load.d/bbswitch.conf' by renaming '.conf' to 'DOTconf'. I see these nvidia related messages after boot through dmesg: $ dmesg | grep -i nvidia [ 30.338461] audit: type=1400 audit(1660917198.283:6): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_load" profile="unconfined" name="nvidia_modprobe" pid=792 comm="apparmor_parser" [ 30.339146] audit: type=1400 audit(1660917198.283:7): apparmor="STATUS" operation="profile_load" profile="unconfined" name="nvidia_modprobe//kmod" pid=792 comm="apparmor_parser" [ 42.359200] nvidia: loading out-of-tree module taints kernel. I probably wasn't explicit enough. I'm not having an issue I'm looking for advice on - I'm sharing my experience with 'the hard way' (which I prefer) and [maybe wrongfully] assuming it could help here or someone else. This Dell Precision 5540 is an Optimus laptop w/ an nvidia T1000 & intel iGPU. The prime and bbswitch stuff seems to make usage harder or inconsistent w/ my expectations, so I'm not using prime in any way and have stopped bbswitch module from loading. 'dmesg' does report something around the i915 driver(s) being loaded, but the T1000 is definitely active according to `glxinfo -B` using 'nvidia_drm' according to 'lsmod'. The settings I'm using were outlined in my initial email w/ .conf files under /etc/{modprobe.d,modules-load.d} & /usr/lib/{modprobe.d,modules-load.d}; I'm not using 1-off items that'd show up under /proc/cmdline or adjusting grub config(s). Here's 'glxinfo -B' and 'inxi --graphics' output: ``` name of display: :0 display: :0 screen: 0 direct rendering: Yes Memory info (GL_NVX_gpu_memory_info): Dedicated video memory: 4096 MB Total available memory: 4096 MB Currently available dedicated video memory: 3778 MB OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation OpenGL renderer string: Quadro T1000/PCIe/SSE2 OpenGL core profile version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 515.65.01 OpenGL core profile shading language version string: 4.60 NVIDIA OpenGL core profile context flags: (none) OpenGL core profile profile mask: core profile OpenGL version string: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 515.65.01 OpenGL shading language version string: 4.60 NVIDIA OpenGL context flags: (none) OpenGL profile mask: (none) OpenGL ES profile version string: OpenGL ES 3.2 NVIDIA 515.65.01 OpenGL ES profile shading language version string: OpenGL ES GLSL ES 3.20 Graphics: Device-1: Intel CoffeeLake-H GT2 [UHD Graphics 630] driver: i915 v: kernel Device-2: NVIDIA TU117GLM [Quadro T1000 Mobile] driver: nvidia v: 515.65.01 Device-3: Microdia Integrated_Webcam_HD type: USB driver: uvcvideo Display: x11 server: X.Org v: 21.1.4 with: Xwayland v: 22.1.3 driver: X: loaded: modesetting, nvidia gpu: i915 resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz OpenGL: renderer: Quadro T1000/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 515.65.01 ``` No more black screen on vt7 and manually loading nvidia_drm followed by `$ sudo systemctl restart display-manager.service` 😀️ -- ~ Scott Bradnick |- Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) Developer |-- Tumbleweed: |--- Dell Precision 5540 [NVIDIA Quadro T1000] (x86_64) |--- O-DROID H2+ [UHD Graphics 600] (x86_64) |--- IceWhale ZimaBoard 832 [Intel HD Graphics 500] (x86_64) |--- 2x Raspberry Pi 4 Model B Rev 1.2 (aarch64) |--- 1x Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Rev 1.2 (aarch64) |--- WinBook TW100 (x86_64) https://keys.openpgp.org/ :: DBC5AA9A2D2BAEBC

SIDE NOTE: I tried 'i915.modeset=0' and while that did stop i915 from being loaded, it also stopped lightdm from loading. I'm sticking w/ NO EXTRA entries since both i915 and nvidia_drm load just fine and I'm greeted w/ a lightdm login window. Even though I've said a few times now - everything is fine for me on the Dell (I'm just trying to add some knowledge or 'this is what worked for me' info to this thread) - I looked at that URL you linked and it doesn't have anything to do w/ what I've been saying (granted, I have mentioned 'display-manager.service' but I NEVER said I was having issues with it). I used to have to restart 'display-manager.service' AFTER manually loading 'nvidia_drm' in the past because there was some mysterious issue blocking it from loading properly UNTIL I made adjustments to .conf files in these 4 (well, technically 3 - [*]one is empty) directories: /etc/modprobe.d [*]/etc/modules-load.d /usr/lib/modprobe.d /usr/lib/modules-load.d I only injected myself into this convo to _hopefully_ assist someone else who might be fighting w/ an Optimus laptop, using nvidia drivers 'the hard way' and getting a black screen. That was happening to me for ~6mos. until I happened upon the settings I['ve been trying to] relay[ed] here. Maybe that was a foolish endeavor 😋️ I'm going to bow-out of this thread as it's gone beyond what my intention was for even getting involved. I have found plymouth much more trouble than it is worth on my system. You can take the conservative approach and test with plymouth disabled by passing the kernel parameter "plymouth.enable=0". If that works, shoot the dog in the head with: # rpm -e plymouth-dracut plymouth-scripts plymouth-branding-openSUSE plymouth-plugin-script plymouth plymouth-plugin-label-ft Never had any problem since 15.0. That's a good point DH. But to taboo Plymouth, I'd have to remember that during install - and human frailties being what they are... it's usually an after-the-fact issue I have to deal with -- given installs are no more frequent than a biennial event for me :) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
