Just ordered mine about an hour ago. http://www.bestbuy.com has it for $69.99 and with shipping (mine is an APO address), the total was $75.49. For awhile, I sat at that site, with my cursor on the "process order" button. I was wondering if I actually needed version 7.1 since I'm quite happy with the 6.4 that I've been using. Then I thought, "kernel 2.4 is included, along with increased USB support, KDE 2, and other stuff." I'd have to download the things I needed if I didn't order a more up-to-date distro, and I'd have to do it on metered internet access. Someone also told me that I should just wait for the iso to appear on Suse's site, but again, I'm tight with my 90 hours a month. So, I came to the conclusion that the $75 would be well spent, though I think when the wife sees the Best Buy card statement, she'll have something not-so-nice to say..... :o) The web site said it wasn't in stock but on order. If in stock, it should ship within 2 to 3 days. On-rder status usually means 5-7 days to ship. That means I should have my 7.1 in 2 weeks....man, I hate living abroad. :o( -- Ron Sinclair aka NipponDSM http://members.tripod.com/~WIGGLIT/ On Fri, 23 Feb 2001, Ron Sinclair wrote:

Sorry. They arrive in the US office and in the distribution centers at about the same time. Many people will get the pre-ordered versions sooner than their local dealer, but if you're living in an area with good connections, well, what can we do... we can't stop the deliveries to the stores just to make them have it later? It just happens. If it happens continuously and you don't like it just buy it locally instead. We'll make less profit, but this is better than seeing you complain - even from a business point of view... Michael

I think it's nice to reward loyal subscribers with an early release. It doesn't seem all that difficult to do. Greg

My statement had nothing to do with the current situation. I couldn't care if 7.1 comes out in November. What was annoying was when I had a subscription I received my box sometimes weeks after they hit the stores. Not to mention that they never automatically shipped anything, you had to call or e-mail to confirm your credit card every time. Greg

well, this will be the LAST time I expect preferential treatment for a preorder from SUSE!! everyone else who extends this does provide a reward by early shipment or reduced charge, or whatever. we all have to learn our lessons and thus I have learned about SUSE USA. howwever, I got bunches of questions on setting up whenever I do eventually receive my copy. chas -- Charles L Hamilton Houston, TX email: chasm@schuetzenmeister.org To rejoin the old (AR-15) RELOAD-L list. Here's another clue that you should have learned from my previous email. SuSE Inc. was around 55 people strong and the office hummed and we liked it..our customers liked it. Then came the swift hand of LAYOFFS, FIRINGS ..A**F**KINGS..whatever you want to call it. SuSE Inc does not normally screw up like this, but with 8 people in the entire office to care take ftp.suse.com, www..etc..etc. It's prolly been a little hard on them. There was a screw up in shipping and they got the boxes at the same time the stores did...and based on the amount of people they now have..they didn't get it out to everyone on time. If you have no sympathy for this. Damn I wish I was your boss. I would ride you like a hooker on nickel night and see how good your work was when people were running you ragged. Seriously, though, I've been on the list for several months, and it's gotten
a LOT of what I would consider to be unusual traffic lately. But, like you
said, with the recent change in staffing AS WELL AS A NEW RELEASE, I think
it's pretty much to be expected.
Now, I just have to figure out how to get my boss to buy me a copy of 7.1,
too. ;) Work bought 7.0 for me :)

Can we please get off it already. I do sympathise with the SuSE Inc. people. It is hard to work through layoffs and stuff. On the other hand, I don't really have much sympathy for the whiners on the list. I'm sorry if that sounds rude, but I can't think of a nicer name for people who complain for no reason. So what if you get your SuSE box a couple of days late. At least you got one. Awaiting all of the venomous replies, Victor Cardona

<SNIP> Ben, In a previous post you referred to laying the responsibility at the door of SuSE Gmbh. They too screw up. Here in the UK I am still waiting for my 7.1 Subscription copy and quite a few others are too. We all seem to have been sent the same e-mail referring to "manufacturing difficulties in the production of our CDs". Given that the UK and US versions of 7.1 should now be exactly the same I tend to doubt the validity of the statement from SuSE as 7.1 is obviously on the streets in the US. I hope I am wrong but international boundaries no longer exist and in a motivated community such as this SuSE Gmbh really do need to make a bit more effort to communicate with their regular customers. Especially when you pre-order!! -- Stu "The specification said Windows 95 or better, so I installed Linux"

Hello Jethro. Thanks for the posting and the suggestion. I think that I will wait until others have received their new subscription versions and then if mine hasn't arrived, I'll contact the address you gave. Even at this moment, the whole of SuSE in Germany might be busy wrapping up and despatching our parcels, and I wouldn't want to disturb them! From the postings I have read, it seems that it is worth waiting for.

The trouble is that for sales reasons Suse wants to be the first one out with the new release of the new kernel and upgraded KDE. Most Linux users are too hungry for updated stuff and want it all now no excuses. The way to cure the whole thing is not to say anything until the actual product is in the hands of both Suse Europe and USA. Release it at the same time and it saves a lot of bull on both sides of the issue. I don't think anyone here is directing their anger at the four people working in the Oakland Office. I think it's directed at Suse's decision making of the whole procedure. The actual complaints that are posted here might be read by someone higher up the scale who might change things in Oakland if there aren't enough people to handle the work. I'm sure we all appreciate your very knowledgable posting here and help to many users including myself. I think the whole month is just getting to you. Time to shut the computer off and go to a movie have a drink and laugh some. Life goes on and tomorrow is another day enjoy them all life is to short. John........
Well, you could try mailing the CTO of SuSE and the CEO..and other board members. They are the reason that this office went down to 6 people. *shrug* This list is not the place to bitch about this. I think there are a few people who work for SuSE that actually read this that have any power at all. As far as mailing someone..mail the management..I think their addresses are public. I realize this list has as many rants on it as technical info..and that's cool. It's just that when I hear people going off on SuSE Inc instead of SuSE GMBH (the parent company)..it irks me. SuSE can't control these things..GMBH does. Call them, email them..let them know what you feel...but don't smack the little child when the father is a drunk..it's bad form so to speak. Make sense? This is all I have to say on this..rants get the d key from now on. * John Murphy (jfmurphy@charter.net) [010223 06:39]: => =>I don't think anyone here is directing their anger at the four people =>working in the Oakland Office. Give 'em a break Guys...Geez, I am just as desperate as anyone else, but no amount of screaming will help. You'd think they were holding candy from a child :-). Why not spend some of that energy your wait is producing by asking your favourite software manufacturers to port to Linux? If you hold the retailers stock back then you have the problem of it not hitting the shelves, with the associated problems of non-exposure, others will complain about this too...Maybe the subscribers could get some sort of access to a beta download?? That other distribution is a sad reflection on the Industry that they can make such a big mistake and basically get away with it. They should have been dropped like a stone right there and then (I am talking about the one with a beta compiler and wrong headers...). Matt On Thu, 22 Feb 2001 22:53:23 Michael Hasenstein wrote:

This is my last shot at this. Recieve it after all the customers? Hardly! It runs to $75 at Best Buy! Thats not cheap, but they got it first. If you read the other e-mails you would have noted that BB get there own shipment. They did not become so large through being incompetent at tere job, so of course they got them out to the stores real fast. Do you think they have 4 people dealing with this? Nope! As for that French distro, they would not nearly be so big as they are now without MacMillan...From what I recall they were dying before the book publisher came to there rescue. I am not going to say more, it comes when it comes. I have to wait too, but its going to be worth it. Matt On Thu, 22 Feb 2001 23:55:20 Ralph F. De Witt wrote:

if that is the case, explain why you were even accepting early orders?? there was no purpose in it, you all billed my credit card at 10pm of the 20th and the mailman has come and gone and I still do not have my Pro 7.1, OR a tracking number, etc. I could have gone over to Best Buys the morning after my card was charged and bought my copy, and tax vs shipping would probly have equaled out. so WHY DID YOU ACCEPT PRE SHIPMENT ORDERS???? so far, it has been an inconvenience. chas -- Charles L Hamilton Houston, TX email: chasm@schuetzenmeister.org To rejoin the old (AR-15) RELOAD-L list. It just happens. If it happens continuously and you don't like it just buy it locally instead. We'll make less profit, but this is better than seeing you complain - even from a business point of view...
my impression from this list's mail on the topic is that this is common and ordinary. The only reason I did it was based on the advice of someone whose reliability took a nose dive. but I bought my Athlon TBird chip this way and I also bought my ASUS A7V mobo this way. Also my CPU cooler fan/sink. you bet I am complaining and you bet that in the future - when it comes to SUSE USA, I will wait and go to CompUSA or wherever and buy it locally, supporting my dealer and hoping for continued support on returns etc. fwiw chas -- Charles L Hamilton Houston, TX email: chasm@schuetzenmeister.org To rejoin the old (AR-15) RELOAD-L list. someone explain to me again why we preordered if we are getting ours mailed to us AFTER they are available in all of BPs stores all over the US??? chas
I also preordered from chumbo. They told me they were already out and since they are first come first server I was still on the back order list and would have to wait till the next arrival. So I just went to best-buy and bought it. My emplorer will spring for that copy so when the ordered copy arrives I'll just take it in to work. -- Mark Hounschell dmarkh@cfl.rr.com

I just got mine from Chumbo. $61.44 = $4.95 shipping -- Q: How many journalists does it take to screw in a lightbulb? A: Three. One to report it as an inspired government program to bring light to the people, one to report it as a diabolical government plot to deprive the poor of darkness, and one to win a pulitzer prize for reporting that Electric Company hired a lightbulb assassin to break the bulb in the first place.
