I tried to go through bugzilla, but was said to try here.
below is a letter I received today from an important french
user group (sort of LUG federation).
To sort out such things, The french community (and I beleive
this is true for all the countries) need a contact _in
Novell's local company_
I already drop a word on this subject, with no answer.
Of course I can write directly to Novell France, but it
would definitively be better if there where an uniform
practice on this subject.
I can translate the text if needed
thanks

Bonjour,
Bonjour,

Merci. translation (summary) what I said:
I see that on your site you link Debian and mandrake.
may be you could also link openSUSE, especially now that we have a french web site
the answer:
* we can't list all the available linux distrot * Mandriva is a french reference distribution for the ease of use by beginners, and Mandriva gives support that we think may ease the migration to open source applications, it's important for us to show that open source apps are available for all and than a first experience with open source will not be negative
* we give privilege to tu AFUL members
(as physical persona as associations or companies) and structure that sign with us press releases, relay our communications and help our actions it's the case for Mandriva (...) * on the other side, Debian is reference for developpers and his development model, philosophy and historical oldness * then we ignored until recently the quality of SUSE distributions and the friendshipness for beginners so we are ready to edit our pages if you give us all the data necessary (for example sending us a new XML source code - ndt:I beg it's for the web page)
* http://www.aful.org/presentations/ecrans.html * http://www.aful.org/faqs/minifaq
if Novell or structures linked to SUSE subscribed to AFUL or co-sign our press realeases a greated place could be done on our web site. I added on my onwn letter that I had set up a link to them on the wiki and they thanks me for that. AFUL is sort of federation or lobby of french LUGs. The subscription is symbolic (€200 for a company, €20 for individual - annual). It has contacts with the french parliament is (one of) the french authorities in the matter of open source computing. for such contact, we need badly a reference people (http://www.novell.fr/company/contacts) there is a Novell board in Toulouse, so I could even see them there, but without a word from somebody here, I wont be taken as serious... jdd NB: some years ago SUSE was very well seen in France, but SUSE deutchland had I don't know what problem with the French leg and from that SUSE falled (and Mandrake growed) -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos

What kind of xml source code are they exactly asking for? houghi -- Nutze die Zeit.

Forget about AFUL. I won't call any names on them although I'd really love to. Useless bunch of self-promoting people just interested in making money. Basically they are saying that 1) they didn't know about the easy-of-use of SUSE Linux for end users 2) they are putting Mandriva on the front page because it's a french-speaking distro and because they have deals with them 3) they are putting Debian on the front page because it's best reflecting the FOSS idea 4) they want Novell to subscribe to AFUL My comments 1) they must be kidding... SUSE is 10x easier to use and install than Mandriva 2) a *deal*. read that again. that's really FOSS spirit, isn't it. And SUSE Linux 10.0 has more french translations than Mandriva (think I'm kidding ? I've seen it with my own eyes) 3) yes, surely. But SUSE Linux OSS is 100% FOSS. So, what is making Debian more FOSS than SUSE Linux? and I won't even talk about the fact that Novell is paying a lot of developers to work on FOSS projects (KDE, GNOME, AppArmor, X.org, Xgl, ...) 4) aaah, there we have it. 'nuff said. ... Keeping the original mail from AFUL in case any french-speaking person would like to comment or maybe correct my impression about them.

not right. I know them for long now, it's a non profit organisation (of course, even non profit make money, but not for people use) SUSE and France History is long and complex. SUSE was, ten years ago, the best french distro, with the far better manual. Then SUSE wants to make a french SUSE company. I don't know (and don't want to know) why, things went wrong and there where conflicts between SUSE de and SUSE fr. The net result was sales in France dropping near zero and the french manual desapearing. Hopefully Novell come and the manual in french come up again. in the mean time, Mandrake come. I -this is only a personal opinion- really dislike the way they pushed Red Hat out of the dealers by a price politic I name dumping. And at that time mandrake was solely Red hat copy and no more. I never understand how they could be seen as French. May be the first directors where french, but for a long time now the central point is in USA.
From now on, Red Hat leaved the home market and I see only Mandrake as trying to run after SUSE in term of ease of use without any chance to reach it, but I'm not objective :-)
to make short a long story, most French don't ever know SUSE exists. and we must try to change this. At present time I try to do. AFUL could help. Links with Novell France could also. I also have contact with french forum Alionet to try to have a more important collaboration... jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/galerie_photo_web/expo/index.html http://lucien.dodin.net http://fr.susewiki.org/index.php?title=Gérer_ses_photos
