More on mounting cf cards / cameras / stability of konq 3.2.2
Sorry if that subject line appears to be mashing things together, they may be related. I've now tried to get a cf card to mount using a usb card reader on two 9.1 machines, fully patched including kernel patches, and upgraded to kde 3.2.2. I've also tried to get both to recognise a camera attached by USB, which works fine under 8.2 and 9.0. Rather like Art Fore's problems with a firewire hd, I get a 'cant enter folder' message, or sometimes no message at all. Though at least ARt seems to be able to get to part of his disk. SuSEplugger can see the cf disk as a disk in at least some cases, and sometimes a Konq window opens. The camera gets assigned a directory like: file:/media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70:0:0:0p1 but you can't change into it or list it. The konqueror window dies after a while and has to be closed down. I've had the same with trying to launch things like the bbc radio listen-on-line service, which again worked fine in 8.2 and 9.0. I'm also reading huge load averages on one of the machines during, though not necessarily due to, this business - loads like 8.5. But top only shows one or two running processes that don't seem to account for that sort of load, and are typically X and top itself. For a lark, I tried booting the machine with the camera plugged in and switched on, but this produced a grub error message and the box wouldn't boot. It also seems to rather defeat the point of USB if one has to reboot - not that things worked then either. I think something is quite odd in the new mounting system, but don't know where to try to fix things. I can't say I think much of the 'My computer' window, much as it may be trying to make windows users feel at home, at my end it just seemed to obscure the device names. I'd be very grateful if people could report success or failure with cf cards and cameras under 9.1, perhaps to me rather than the list, and then I'll summarise if there's enough traffic to warrant it. -- Fergus Wilde Chetham's Library Long Millgate Manchester M3 1SB Tel: +44 161 834 7961 Fax: +44 161 839 5797 http://www.chethams.org.uk

Responding to your own query is the mark of the loon. But I forgot, rudely, to mention that Patrick Shanahan has already kindly suggested using 'rchotplug restart' to see if it would get the disk or camera to mount properly; sadly it doesn't.
Did you look in My Computer to see if the camera is in there after you plug it in? You can do the same thing as above by the URL devices:/ in a konqueror window. I believe in 9.1 that cameras as well as CDs and floppies are now handled by submount. Marshall

Thanks Marshall, yes, as I was saying, the machine sees the camera and makes it go like:
Rather like Art Fore's problems with a firewire hd, I get a 'cant enter folder' message, or sometimes no message at all. Though at least ARt seems to be able to get to part of his disk. SuSEplugger can see the cf disk as a disk in at least some cases, and sometimes a Konq window opens. The camera gets assigned a directory like:
file:/media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70:0:0:0p1
But the point is that directory is not accessible. You can cd into it, but you cant get an ls (No media found). In some instances Konq opens a window, but it locks up and doesn't display any contents. So submount (if the culprit) is failing to mount it. I'm about to post a transcript of the gory USB logs, in case some USB guru can help ... Thanks again Fergus

Another reply to own thread - sorry - I just think USB experts might spot why 8.2 and 9.0 can mount this compact flash disk so that one can actually read data off it either in a reader or in a camera, and why 9.1 can do neither. For the benefit of those who may not have enjoyed previous elements of the thread, in essence the mounting process gets as far as providing a location like: file:/media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70:0:0:0p1 But then won't actually let you read the disk, and locks Konqueror 3.2.2 so that it has to be destroyed.
The camera gets assigned a directory like:
file:/media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70:0:0:0p1
but you can't change into it or list it.

Another reply to own thread - sorry - I just think USB experts might spot why 8.2 and 9.0 can mount this compact flash disk so that one can actually read data off it either in a reader or in a camera, and why 9.1 can do neither.
For the benefit of those who may not have enjoyed previous elements of the thread, in essence the mounting process gets as far as providing a location like:
file:/media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70:0:0:0p1
But then won't actually let you read the disk, and locks Konqueror 3.2.2 so that it has to be destroyed.
Here's a transcript of 9.1 struggling to mount the camera, twice:

I've now tried to get a cf card to mount using a usb card reader on two 9.1 machines, fully patched including kernel patches, and upgraded to kde 3.2.2. I've also tried to get both to recognise a camera attached by USB, which works fine under 8.2 and 9.0.
Rather like Art Fore's problems with a firewire hd, I get a 'cant enter folder' message, or sometimes no message at all. Though at least ARt seems to be able to get to part of his disk. SuSEplugger can see the cf disk as a disk in at least some cases, and sometimes a Konq window opens. The camera gets assigned a directory like:
file:/media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70:0:0:0p1
but you can't change into it or list it.
You might try: as root make a directory under /media ie: mkdir /media/sda1 as root do: /sbin/rchotplug restart plugin the chip as root: mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /media/sda1 then try to access the directory /media/sda1 report results -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711

Thanks again, Patrick: effectively it won't let you do that. I indeed created /media/sda1, restarted hotplug, etc, but it will only mount as: /media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70:0:0:0p1 I tried deleting that directory, but as soon as you switch on the camera it recreated it and mounted it before I could issue the alternate mount command you suggest. The appropriate part of the output of 'mount' looks like: pc02:/home/fergus # mount usbfs on /proc/bus/usb type usbfs (rw) /dev/sda1 on /media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70:0:0:0p1 type subfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev, sync,fs=floppyfss, procuid) You can cd to that directory: pc02:/home/fergus # cd /media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70\:0\:0\:0p1/ pc02:/media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70:0:0:0p1 # ls But the ls command never returns and it locks up the Konsole window. Still drawing a blank, I fear - for the benefit of newcomers, and at the risk of nauseating those who've read the thread, this all worked fine in 8.2 and 9.0 Thanks for your input Fergus -- Fergus Wilde Chetham's Library Long Millgate Manchester M3 1SB Tel: +44 161 834 7961 Fax: +44 161 839 5797 http://www.chethams.org.uk

Anything new with this? I'm experiencing the same frustrating problem when trying to mount my camera. The simplest solution to this is to leave the mount tool to do it's thing and let it create the folder. Then do: ln -s /media/xxx /media/usb-storage-odd-NIKON-NIKONDSCD70\:0\:0\:0p1/ Replacing xxx with whatever you want to call it. I always found those sda1

I'm still having the issue with accessing the data in the drive that gets created automatically by SUSE. The automounting (in theory) looks good, but when I click on the drive or attempt to access the created mountpoint via the shell, it just hangs. I had it work for me one time out of the 10 or so times I've tried it since I installed 9.1. -Trey -- Trey Sizemore trey@fastmail.fm

The one time I saw strange behaviour was a key that was fine under windows, but when you looked at it with linux, it had a really stuffed up partition table. You could try repartitioning the device with fdisk, and creating a new partiton. Along the lines of (as root): fdisk -l /dev/sda or whatever the correct device is umount /dev/sdaX repeat for any partitions fdisk /dev/sda and create a new primary mkfs.msdos /dev/sda1 Not sure if unplugging and replugging will do the trick, or if you'll have to give subfs a nudge, or easiest, reboot. -- Steve Boddy
