[opensuse] Can somebody tell me if this is a bug or not
Okay, I pull up configure desktop on KDE and disable Power management, but it still seems to shut down the monitor after a given period when I reboot (it seems to hold during that session, at least for a while). Worse, when I move the mouse and the screen comes back on, the internet is disconnected, forcing a reboot. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If I knew why the Internet is disconnecting (network Comcast cable) when my computer screen shuts off, I wouldn't be posting. All I know is that when I move my mouse and the screen turns back on, sometimes (usually 2 hours or greater), my Internet is disconnected. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Sounds to me like your power settings might be extreme but that's just a guess. If most everything shuts down during that period, it could easily snarfle your connection. No problems when I'm working, it runs just fine. Bruce Marshall wrote:

I don't know. From the first message in this thread that I posted: "Okay, I pull up configure desktop on KDE and disable Power management, but it still seems to shut down the monitor after a given period when I reboot (it seems to hold during that session, at least for a while).Worse, when I move the mouse and the screen comes back on, the internet is disconnected, forcing a reboot." In other words: Yes I have looked in Power Management, both through Yast (which doesn't seem to have a disable power management function), and KDE (which does). Now, according to the KDE, which you find by right clicking on the wallpaper, going to configure desktop, clicking on "Display", and clicking on power control, Power Management is disabled, but when I reboot, and it's on, it will shut back down after a period. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Just did, there's a power after AC failure and a SOL setting, nothing that even looks like shutdown the monitor after a given period of time. Bruce Marshall wrote:

I have had frequently the problem of monitor blanking after some time of unactivity, without any mean to prevent this (may be this is _in_ the monitor), but none of your other problems jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/mediawiki/index.php/GPS_Lowrance_GO --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Update on the monitor: Took a look at the menu and found a "Power Saver" setting, which I turned off. Now what this has to do with the Internet I have no idea (maybe the two issues aren't related). Bruce Marshall wrote:

The Internet access shut down, although I was able to restart it with rcnetwork restart, so now I've got the error narrowed down. John Meyer wrote:

Dear Patrick, This sounds very much like a comms issue with your modem. Please tel us if this is a NEW problem or has it just started and if just started 'what has changed comms and ISP wise' The particular setting in the modem (and I assume your are on ADSL or DSLAM) is the keep alive option. Depending on the ISP they will tell you if you need it on or off. Mostly it is OFF. Keep Alive when not expected by your ISP will disconnect you after an idle period of time when this feature activates. Check with your ISP, but firstly check the setting in the Modem Manual. I may be able to help you IF your ISP wants you to change this option and you are not happy to alter settings in your Modem at last resort, however the most crucial question is above Scott On Thu, 2006-11-09 at 23:15 -0500, Kenneth Schneider wrote:

I believe that you have attributed something mistakenly to me. Best check the thread. I have no connect problems and am on cable, full time connect. You have posted an HTML message into a text only mail list. Please refrain. And please avoid TOFU. thankyou for volunteering your expertise. -- Patrick Shanahan Registered Linux User #207535 http://wahoo.no-ip.org @ http://counter.li.org HOG # US1244711 Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
