Well, the new machine seems to be largely running with minimal issues.
What did you get?
I have several DVDs that are region 1, and they work fine. However, I also have some that are region 2, and those don't want to play.
When I got my HP (Canadian model, so I suppose the drive is set to region 1 by default), I had the same problem. My (one) Region 1 DVD played fine, but my other DVDs (all Region 2) wouldn't. I had to boot into Windows, pop in a Region 2 disc, let WinDVD set the region to 2, and after that everything worked OK. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I got a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4324. It has a Core 2 Duo, which is running SuSE 10.1 64 bit happily (though I've had a couple of mysterious crashes--particularly when changing video modes) Sound didn't start up directly, but worked after a simple kick--I had to tell Yast to use the soundcard it found and turn the master volume up but that was all. Video is running 1280x800 after some peculiarities--changing mode in Yast and running the "test server" option crashed it dead. But changing the configured mode and _not_ testing but then rebooting, and it was fine. Wireless worked right out of the box which was a pleasant suprise I've never had before. Curiously, perhaps, on my old Tosh (32 bit) Xine worked just fine with either region 1 or 2, I didn't have to change anything. That's quite important to me as I have several region 2 disks (great British movies and TV). The problem with changing the region code of the drive is that most of the drives only allow you to change it a limited number of times (about 5 usually) and after that they lock the region permanently. So, still hoping someone can tell me what I didn't do, or what version of libdvdcss I need perhaps... "You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. True. Supposedly you can have the manufacturer reset it, though. Still, I heard there are region bit "resetter" programs for windows. I can't say if it is true, I don't use windows much.

It should have worked. But I can't try, all my dvds are of the same region: | libdvdcss is a simple library designed for accessing DVDs like a block | device without having to bother about the decryption. The important | features are: | * Portability: currently supported platforms are GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, | NetBSD, OpenBSD, BSD/OS, BeOS, Windows 95/98, Windows NT/2000, MacOS | X, Solaris, HP-UX and OS/2. | * Adaptability: unlike most similar projects, libdvdcss doesn't require | the region of your drive to be set and will try its best to read from | the disc even in the case of a region mismatch. | * Simplicity: a DVD player can be built around the libdvdcss API using | no more than 4 or 5 library calls. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Check for CD/DVD drive firmware updates that leave your device in a 'region free' state. Also get the manufacturer's newest firmware and keep it handy in case of warranty issues that may require having an approved firmware installed.
