Hi WAs wondering if some one could tell me if this type of computer would work good with linux before i think about getting it is an HP Pavillion 503w-b it has an intel celeron processor thanks for any input Bob
Yo dude, you really must give a bit more info. Just saying "will computer xyz work?" doesn't tell us much. I did a Google search and can't find much info about this particular HP machine (lots on the 502 though). Generally speaking any x86 based computer will work with Linux (as will other platforms, but since you asked about a PC, I'll keep the answer to that). I have Linux installed and working fine on an AMD386sx25, on an IntelP75, and on an AMD 1GHz Athalon. I am guessing that since the HP Pavilion 503 is new enough to have a Celeron processor that it will work fine. If it has AC97 sound, you may run into some issues getting that to work (it is possible, but not out of the box easy). If it has a Winmodem, that can also cause some difficulty (but it usually can be made to work). Maybe with some specs for the system you are looking at buying you will get a better answer. You can also go look up the specific hardware pieces in the SuSE Hardware database: http://hardwaredb.suse.de/?LANG=en_UK C. On Sunday 29 September 2002 16:44, N1UAN Bob wrote:

Hi bob, If the computer you are referring to is a the HP Pavilion 503w Desktop PC, you can find the specs for it at: http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hppavilion90853&LC=personal_computing&Tfile=bph07773 The keyboard interface that comes with this PC was created for use with the Windows OS. It will still function without windows, but you will have about 21 extra buttons that will be useless on that keyboard [HP internet keyboard]. This computer also comes pre-installed with windows xp home edition and extra windows software (much of it being trial/limited/share ware). Do you plan on cleaning windows out and doing a fresh install? HP pavilion's do not ship with windows xp recovery or install disks - all recovery utilities are stored in a partition on the hard drive. Hp will, however, let you 'purchase' a recovery disk from them for a "small" cost (unknown amount). You will definitely want to check the SuSE hardware database for compatibility with the details of your prospective purchase. I am not sure what type of CDRW is included with this computer, but I have a 'HP pavilion 551w' at home, which has a Mitsumi CDRW. I have yet to find a module (driver) for it in linux. Mitsumi has no plans to include any support for linux since my last contact with them. This CDRW drive has worked well for me thus far fortunately, but -- I have not been able to write to CD disks yet... My personal advice -- if you are not sure if your computer and its devices are compatible with linux, do your homework on it (research) or choose a different manufacturer that has a whole system which is compatible. Good luck, and best regards, Ron Boyer On Sunday 29 September 2002 12:36, Clayton Cornell wrote:

Actually, you "should" be able to remap those keys. I have a Logitech coreless keyboard with a whack of extra buttons. I have some of the extra keys set up to do things like the Euro symbol. C.
Its important you concentrate more on the peripherals that come with the computer rather than the CPU. For example if you want to get FireWire support, make sure you get an OHCI compliant card----the ones from Sony won't work with Linux. Make sure your video card is supported by Linux.....nVidia has Linux drivers on their site...which is what I like....what I like is that the Manufacturer provides Linux drivers---not some third party open-source drivers. If you want to get a Webcam, you can get a list of supported devices from linux-usb.org (.com I think). By making careful decisions about the peripherals, I am sure you will get a smooth installation of Linux. BTW, HP printers are good. HP is supporting the open-source drivers development of Linux drivers. What I hate is products that don't have linux drivers available AND the manufacturer refuses to release the hardware specs so taht Linux drivers can be written. I can't give you a list of such devices---you just have to search device at a time. Unfortunately I bought my Dell computer before I got Linuxinized. The next time I buy a computer, I will visit those sites that sell pre-installed Linux machines. Salman

I don't remember any of those off the top of my head, but I think you can visit. www.linux.org and click on "Hardware" link I believe---it should get you there. Can anyone else please quote a few good sites? On Monday 30 September 2002 02:29, Linux Leo wrote:

Ive had very bad experince with HP pavillion Laptops, I would avoid their products like the plague. Also the celerons are known to be the low end of procesors. Id go with a generic no name pc that was made for you and use an AMD processor if anything. Eg I just got a new pc amd 2G high end asus board 512 ram 2 40G drives and DVD drive for $600 this was from a vendor called beyond computor at a local show. Ive personally always had positive experience with computor shows http://www.pc-beyond.com Ive bought 3 systems from these guys I would highly avoid hp pavillions and especially celeron processors... my 2cts rob -- Fortune's Real-Life Courtroom Quote #37: Q: Did he pick the dog up by the ears? One that doesn't have Windows preinstalled: if you need Windows you can use your old OEM disk, though installing Windows is harder than installing SuSE - that will save a lot and let you buy the hardware you need. I got one a few days ago from www.savastore.com, though you may want a more local vendor: MSI6533+GEforce4MX440+EIDE HD+LG DVDreader+Floppy, plugged my old cards, monitor, CDRW in and installed. Apart from a few minor problems with APIC and BIOS PnP everything was fine. JDL
Hi, I'm new to linux networks. I have running linux routers with 2 interfaces using routed. Please, how can I set speed limit on eth0? It's current transfare rate is 10Mbit/s and I would like to set it to 100Kb/s (due to testing another application) Thank you very much. _______________________________________________________________ Marek Libra Phone:+42 0776 039 948 Email: xlibra@fi.muni.cz Faculty of Informatics, Masaryk University Brno, Czech Republic _______________________________________________________________
Hi I know that this is possible with squid proxy server. Also try to search http://www.freshmeat.net for a SW capable of limiting the bandwidth. Jaska.

Would you care to elaborate what exactly is the cryptic command that helped you? -Stathis. Marek Libra wrote:
