Hi bob, If the computer you are referring to is a the HP Pavilion 503w Desktop PC, you can find the specs for it at: http://www.hp.com/cgi-bin/cposupport/get_doc.pl?SNI=hppavilion90853&LC=personal_computing&Tfile=bph07773 The keyboard interface that comes with this PC was created for use with the Windows OS. It will still function without windows, but you will have about 21 extra buttons that will be useless on that keyboard [HP internet keyboard]. This computer also comes pre-installed with windows xp home edition and extra windows software (much of it being trial/limited/share ware). Do you plan on cleaning windows out and doing a fresh install? HP pavilion's do not ship with windows xp recovery or install disks - all recovery utilities are stored in a partition on the hard drive. Hp will, however, let you 'purchase' a recovery disk from them for a "small" cost (unknown amount). You will definitely want to check the SuSE hardware database for compatibility with the details of your prospective purchase. I am not sure what type of CDRW is included with this computer, but I have a 'HP pavilion 551w' at home, which has a Mitsumi CDRW. I have yet to find a module (driver) for it in linux. Mitsumi has no plans to include any support for linux since my last contact with them. This CDRW drive has worked well for me thus far fortunately, but -- I have not been able to write to CD disks yet... My personal advice -- if you are not sure if your computer and its devices are compatible with linux, do your homework on it (research) or choose a different manufacturer that has a whole system which is compatible. Good luck, and best regards, Ron Boyer On Sunday 29 September 2002 12:36, Clayton Cornell wrote:
Yo dude, you really must give a bit more info. Just saying "will computer xyz work?" doesn't tell us much. I did a Google search and can't find much info about this particular HP machine (lots on the 502 though).
Generally speaking any x86 based computer will work with Linux (as will other platforms, but since you asked about a PC, I'll keep the answer to that). I have Linux installed and working fine on an AMD386sx25, on an IntelP75, and on an AMD 1GHz Athalon.
I am guessing that since the HP Pavilion 503 is new enough to have a Celeron processor that it will work fine. If it has AC97 sound, you may run into some issues getting that to work (it is possible, but not out of the box easy). If it has a Winmodem, that can also cause some difficulty (but it usually can be made to work).
Maybe with some specs for the system you are looking at buying you will get a better answer.
You can also go look up the specific hardware pieces in the SuSE Hardware database: http://hardwaredb.suse.de/?LANG=en_UK
