I've got a couple of setup problems: sound and network: I use pacbell's dsl service with dynamic IP address. Pacific Bell provided the ethernet card and a westell dsl device. Win2K device manager reports them as: -- Realtek RTL8139(a)-based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter -- NTS Enternet P.P.P.o.E Adapter I'm not able to get the network to run. dhcp can't get a response from pacbell.net Where is the dhcp configured. Do I have to setup tcp/ip myself? If so, where are the tcp/ip files? tcpdump output below I've found drivers for my ethernet card (http://www.scyld.com/network/rtl8139.html ), and pacbell provides source for enternet 100 ( http://dialup.pacbell.net/dsl/enternet.html ) with install instructions for dhcp. If I setup the dhcp, will the tcp/ip then work? The next problem is getting some kind of sound. My modem is a combination modem/sound card. the modem is Rockwell HCF 56K Data fax PCI modem and the sound is Riptide Audio Device. The sound device gets configured with the name of the modem, when I try to start it I get the error message 'Invalid Module Name'. Has anyone come across this device and managed to get it working? I'm willing to bet the reason you aren't getting a response is because you aren't using DHCP but PPPOE. Setup PPPOE instead of DHCP. The roaring Penguin package is likely the simplest to use.

If thats the NTS stuff don't use it if they offer you money. Just install Roaring Penguin. Which version of SuSE are you using? Roaring Penguin has shipped with SuSE for awhile. If you have an older version try: http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/ Nick
Thanks Nick and Paul for helping. I finally got connected early this morning/late last night by by combining lots of different advice. the setup is on an HP-Pavilion, suse 7.1 with 2.4 kernel ( required for nvidia card) Nick was right. I didn't have pppoe installed. as a matter of fact, ppp was there, but no config files and as Paul mentioned, kinternet doesn't work with 2.4. I wasn't able to run roaring penguin. Somewhere between the download to work, mail to Win2K connection and a copy from the FAT32 partition to the linux one, the file was corrupted. Big surprise! I uninstalled kinternet and wvdial ( I think wvdial gets installed when you ask for ADSL from YaST2) used kpackage to reinstall ppp and pppoe from the cd, used pacbell's advice on config files ( from their enternet300 src package ) and everything worked. Can the start-pppoe script be run from an icon? does it have to be run by root? I still have no sound and my machine locks up when I try to 'su', but sudo bash works just fine. Again, thanks for the quick response. I still haven't gotten any answers from suse isupport - except automated responses with the ticket number.
