[opensuse] Osm2mp on opensuse
Hi everybody. I am trying to install osm2mp a converter program for openstreetmap (vs garmin) on opensuse Leap 15. The page of osm gives following advice (that does not tell me a lot about what they do there) and I would like to know if somebody tried it, has any experience with it, knows whether the indicated way is viable for leap: Indications are: OpenSUSE Open terminal app and enter following commands: su zypper in perl-YAML perl -MCPAN -e "install List::MoreUtils" perl -MCPAN -e "install Text::Unidecode" perl -MCPAN -e "install Data::Dump" perl -MCPAN -e "install Math::Polygon" perl -MCPAN -e "install Inline::MakeMaker" perl -MCPAN -e "install Math::Geometry::Planar::GPC::Polygon" perl -MCPAN -e "install Math::Polygon::Tree" perl -MCPAN -e "install Tree::R" Does this still work in leap 15? (seems to be just a collection of perl scripts? _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Ihre E-Mail-Postfcher sicher & zentral an einem Ort. I see no reason why it shouldn't - it's just installing a bunch of perl libraries from CPAN. I haven't done that for a while, but istr just using the "cpan" command? -- Per Jessen, Zürich (17.9°C) http://www.hostsuisse.com/ - dedicated server rental in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well I am struggling because I find there is very little information on how to use it. OSM seems to be done for people who know already to do all that....and if you google you find a wealth of "proprietary" solutions offering less but coming up as first choice using osm data. What I do: I plan a 1000 km Trip with the bicycle from Germany to Italy to be done in a few weeks from now. While I know the topography from France, Spain, PT and Belgium well, here I have to consider the Alps (I am still digesting

So I was quite easily and happily using the OSM to create the bicycle track but given that good gps for bycicles are way too expensive e.g. Garmin Edge 1030 costs 500 Euro (if I am going for that, I can go with a primitive car gps for 80 Euro and sleep in every hotel I find. It is for orientation and 500 Euro are out of price. Thus I have to charge the map osm in a format the e.g. Garmin car gps does understand. So you can follow the track and are not killed in the alps by an impossible passage. This script they say does this, I have yet to find out how. I guess it is CLI as I did not see any "GUI". But a howto or a video would be appreciated, maybe I will find on youtube, did not search yet. Wanted just to find out if it works on opensuse. And maybe find somebody who has some experience with this. _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Ihre E-Mail-Postfächer sicher & zentral an einem Ort. You could use a cheap or existing android phone with gps instead, as there are apps that use the OSM maps for it. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.3 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

You could use a cheap or existing android phone with gps instead, as there are apps that use the OSM maps for it. I have a RAM mount with usb power from a hub dynamo via the b&m "E-Werk". So I need a cheap gps to be able to load even in case it rains. While such a gps I can load it while riding and use a buffer powerbank with 10 000 Ah and have several days of safety (the main part of camping allow a recharge over night in reception of the power bank) _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Ihre E-Mail-Postfächer sicher & zentral an einem Ort. I have never seen malware on any smartphone close enough to me.

You mean that the battery doesn't hold up a day? Mine lasted 3 days till I started loading apps and services. And you say you have a dynamo, anyway. Of course, the gps chip is a drain when used. As to rain, I just saw yesterday a plastic envelope to put the phone inside that promises to keep the water out while you swim up to half an hour (and 1 metre below surface) - and still be able to use the phone and take photos. car gps a pretty asking for charge and have very bad batteries. Smartphones are random. My archos was emptying the battery when on GPS, even if plugged on an usb charging device! but my present moto G4+ (under 100e refurbished, I have two of them) have a very reasonable battery use and probably several days on high powerbank (dynamos is a last resort system), with osmand it uses openstreetmaps jdd -- http://dodin.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well you don't tell us exactly what instructions you are referring to, so it's difficult to be sure, but assuming you are referring to <https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Osm2mp#OpenSUSE> then the bit you have missed is actually installing the osm2mp perl program: svn co https://github.com/liosha/osm2mp osm2mp and you might also follow the link to the forum discussion that is mentioned and gives a lot more information.
Indications are: OpenSUSE Open terminal app and enter following commands:
su zypper in perl-YAML perl -MCPAN -e "install List::MoreUtils" perl -MCPAN -e "install Text::Unidecode" perl -MCPAN -e "install Data::Dump" perl -MCPAN -e "install Math::Polygon" perl -MCPAN -e "install Inline::MakeMaker" perl -MCPAN -e "install Math::Geometry::Planar::GPC::Polygon" perl -MCPAN -e "install Math::Polygon::Tree" perl -MCPAN -e "install Tree::R"
Does this still work in leap 15? (seems to be just a collection of perl scripts?
As you say, it's just a collection of perl modules that are needed by the perl program (i.e. it's apparently a pure perl application). As such it will work on pretty much any system. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well that was stupid, forgot to paste: http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/blfs/edguide/chapter03.html is an svn command for this to be run as sudo or as local user? Given that the other commands use zypper, I would suppose this is as sudo? _________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________ Ihre E-Mail-Postfcher sicher & zentral an einem Ort. Without reading the instructions on this site, either. svn co, short for check out, just copies source files into the current directory (from the upstream developer tree), creating directory "osm2mp" to put the files in. There is probably some install command later that would run as root, unless you want to run the program only from your home directory. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. It's supposedly a perl script, so there's no installation to be done. It just needs to be written somewhere, and it can be done by whichever users have the ability to write to wherever you want to put it. Same goes for the perl modules by the way. If you want them to be usable by everyone, then you need to to install them as root, but if you only plan to use them as yourself then you can install them as you. And as Per said, cpan (or the newer cpanm) is a good command to use to download and install them as it will take care of dependencies. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
Only a suggestion, some friends use this for bike tours: there is a really good cheap app (30€): Komoot https://www.komoot.de/ will show you the smallest trails, how up how down, how many meters above see level and so on. simoN -- www.becherer.de -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
