Hello Linux folks, Could somebody please give me clarification about Squid proxy purposes. Do I really need this squid daemon running for general web browsing, firewalling and masquerading of my home network? No, not at all. For a single workplace, Squid is overkill IMHO. Squid is a http proxy, that means it caches web pages for quicker viewing. If you want a fast http proxy without the overhead and the complexity of Squid, have a look at wwwoffle. Squid has nothing to do with firewalling and masquerading, this is being handled by different tools. Well, its not THAT complicated. And you can even use Webmin to help set it up. I use it, both on my ISDN gateway machine at home as well as on my work machine. Works great as a single cache for ALL my browsers on a single box: Netscape 4.72 , 6pre1, Mozilla, etc. And I even use it to support windows clients running in a VMware session. Tip: use Squid (or wwwoffle), with your netscape cache set to 0. Seems to make my Netscape more stable.... Squid is just a web proxy.. It is preferable to use rather than letting your clients masq out to the real world.. You don't NEED it.. But it can be nice :) Cya Matthew Matthew King: Network Engineer, Cable & Wireless Optus. My ICQ#: 2342475 Message me!
