Could somebody please give me clarification about Squid proxy purposes. Do I really need this squid daemon running for general web browsing, firewalling and masquerading of my home network?
No, not at all. For a single workplace, Squid is overkill IMHO. Squid is a http proxy, that means it caches web pages for quicker viewing. If you want a fast http proxy without the overhead and the complexity of Squid, have a look at wwwoffle. Squid has nothing to do with firewalling and masquerading, this is being handled by different tools.
