KDE.org FTP download is better!!!
Hi everyone, I thought I'd let everyone know I downloaded the SuSE RPM's from kde.org, and some, abeit not all, of the bugs on the suse.com version are fixed (SSL works!). As always both versions are from SuSE, but I guess the kde.org one must have been a later build? It may also be that I fixed some of the problems by going carefully over the KDE 2.2 dependances rather than running RPM with nodeps per usual. Anyway it is working quite good on my freshly reinstalled system. Oh, and I want to give a hearty thanks to SuSE for providing experimental RPM's that include prelinking!!! Thanks a ton! Just follow the link from the 2.2 announcement at KDE.org to get the latest SuSE binaries for 6.3 or later. -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Not that I'd want to imply Tim is other than right, but could someone from
SuSE maybe just confirm whether the rpms at suse.de/en, suse.com, and
ftp.kde.org are identical, or slightly different builds. Now this issue's
been raised, I am a bit disinclined to download and update to superseded
versions, and I expect many others will be too. Maybe Lenz could let us
know? Sorry to him, as I know he's a busy man ...
Best to all
Fergus

:) I just talked with our main KDE maintainer and he confirmed that the RPMs on ftp.suse.com are in fact newer builds than the ones on kde.org - he cannot easily update the packages there. Especially the kdevelop RPM on kde.org still has a little buglet (the kdevelop binary has the wrong name). So it's in fact the *earlier* build at kde.org that Tim identifies as not suffering from an SSL problem, tho' obviously the KDevelop binary thing is cured in the ones on suse.com. That would appear to mean the later build has the bigger problems ... Sorry to press a point, but does that agree with what others are finding, about the https problems, etc?

My suggestion would be to download the KDE 2.2 binaries from a KDE.org mirror, and then if you need KDevelop get that from suse.com. So far the KDE.org binaries have been very nice, and just fixing the SSL problem alone seems to make the whole thing worth it... -Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. Hmm... that would explain why the KDE.org ones potentially could have SSL and the SuSE ones do not. Lenz, do you know if the lack of SSL support with the RPM's on suse.com will be fixed soon? Maybe then I will switch to the suse.com binaries... Thanks, Tim -- ----------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R. hmm... ssl works with konqueror, I've just told konqueror the path to openssl library... konqueror coudn't find it itself. Konqueror settings > Crypto > OpenSSL (here goes the path /usr/ssl/lib/, then 'Test' and it works? ain, with kde2.2 from suse ftp

I downloaded the packages from suse.com on the night they were put up, and SSL worked here from the start. This problem that you and others have had must be because of something else.
