A very poor friend gave me his Packard Bell Celeron 366 & 64M of RAM to "fix". The originally planned fix was the usual one, reinstall doze 98 to get rid of the junkware, trojans, spyware & virii. Once I got that done, I talked him into converting to multiboot with Linux. He said OK, but only afterward did I think about the limited RAM problem. I stuck in another 32M stick & tried to do an FTP 9.1 install. After about 10 hours of errors and only 15% complete due to excess swap churning, I stole a 128M stick out of another machine to retry the install, and that is now finished. Now I need to pull my 128M back out (and my NIC). I can let him keep my 32M stick, for an installed total of 96M. He'll be on dialup only. So, I can reduce overhead by disabling at least some portion of the network, but how do I do that? If I use runlevel editor to disable network in 3 & 5, will dialup still work? What else can I uninstall or disable to ease the pain of only 96M of RAM (until he can get more, if he can at all)? Do not disable networking. Networking is not what is using memory, it is the X-window display, kde or gnome. Do not disable networking. Networking is not what is using memory, it is the X-window display, kde or gnome. Change is window manager to Xfce and you will run fine.

I agree as to XFCE. It is a very good desktop. Be sure you don't use the one that came with SuSE. Delete that copy, using YAST. Then go to the XFCE web site (www.sfce.com) and follow the instructions to get to the web site from which you can get the RPMs of version 4.6 available for SuSE 9.1. dj tuchler

Got it running-- Good ol' command-line rpm -Uvh ;) Seems like a nice little desktop, never used it before, but definately makes my old Celeron 366 laptop a lot snappier.

That's what I did - Tossed them in a directory, rpm -Uvh *.rpm It complained about one dependency (gtk2-services) but that was easy to get via apt. After that, I ran SuSEconfig & ldconfig (as root), logged out of KDE, and xfce was a new menu option on the logon menu.

This is an error from rpm...

That's because rpm errored

Subsequent initiatin of SuSEconfig and ldconfig completed w/o any errors.

dbh shows successful install and from what I see in the rpm, the post script is just an echo of text:

I would expect to see /sbin/ldconfig there...

Is this something to worry about? I would think not!

Not for me. :-( It complained about 3 missing packages. I installed those with YaST, then did rpm -Uvh *rpm. That seemed to run without complaint, as did SuSEconfig and ldconfig afterward. If you're running KDE try this, click on the Gecko and select "Run Command", enter kdesu konqueror, and input the root password at the prompt. Navigate to the directory, locate the xfce4.desktop file and right click it, select open with, and choose a text editor, I used nedit, but you might not have that installed. Here's the top of the file that I used with the editions that Leenart mentions: [Desktop Entry] Encoding=UTF-8 Type=XSession Exec=startxfce4 TryExec=startxfce4 Name=XFce4 ...... Name[sv]=Xfce4 Name[xx]=xxXFce4xx

I do realize that this isn't just a few clicks, but the information that Leenart and others have posted has allowed me to, in the space of several minutes dl, install, make this desktop available, and switch users to test and make sure it works. (it did. :) Mike

Ok, then I think startxfce4, that is mentioned by the 'Exec' and 'TryExec' variables in xfce4.desktop, cannot be found. Maybe the package containing that command is missing? Or the command has been renamed? Cheers, Leen

I agree as to XFCE. It is a very good desktop. Be sure you don't use the one that came with SuSE. Delete that copy, using YAST. Then go to the XFCE web site (www.sfce.com) and follow the instructions to get to the web site from which you can get the RPMs of version 4.6 available for SuSE 9.1.

I tried. I went to http://www.xfce.org and used wget to put all the 9.1 contrib rpms in a local dir. I then started YaST and set that dir as an additional source.
