Funny that. I've had no trouble installing the ATI drivers on my AMD64 x 2 SUSE 10.0 Compaq box - and I'm hopeless at these sorts of things. I just downloaded them from ATI, ran the install script, did aticonfig --initial and that was it. I've also installed quite a few updates as well. Same procedure. No problems - except the box sometimes (once a month - ish) refuses to boot to runlevel 5. I just run aticonfig --initial from the command line, let it tell me there's nothing to do, then reboot and all's well again. I must have got lucky.
