You must be using an old version of zypper (0.8.x perhaps?). The message is unfortunate there. Newer zypper will tell you this:
"One of installed patches affects the package manager itself. Run this command once more to install any other needed patches."
So running the 'up -t patch' (or just 'patch' since zypper 1.0.x) once again is all there is to it.
I got that same message as Hylton when I ran 'zypper up' from a console window just yesterday. This is on an openSUSE 11.0 system that had all the patches applied to it about two weeks back.
