I have SuSE 7.1 running out of the box on without any problems on both
Toshiba Tecra 8100 and on the Satellite Pro.
Not strictly relevent, but last month we bought a Dell Power Edge 1550
server, sans operating suystem, and I was able to put SuSE7.1 straight on
to it with no messing or hassles - not something I'd like to even try with
any variety of Windoze!

| I recommend Dell. I've received extremely good service on their
products,
| and everything you can expect to work works. Just make sure to choose the
| non-integrated options on the Dimension L series or go for the slightly
more
| expensive 4100 series. Not all of their components work in Linux, but
most of
| their systems have available options to insure 100% Linux compatability.
|
| I think you will also find feature-per-feature that Dell will generally
be
| cheaper than any major competitor or even Mom 'n Pop shops.
|
| Finally, for anyone considering a laptop - Dell's laptops work well in
| Linux too. :-)
