It is possible that you are entering the password, but that in file /opt/kde2/share/config/kdmrc, the line "EchoMode=" is set to "EchoMode=NoStars". Change this to "EchoMode=OneStar" and you will see 1 asterisk for each character in your password. I think this can be set to ThreeStars also, but I have never tried it.
This made my pulse race a little faster, until I edited kdmrc to produce 'OneStar'. Alas, no stars are produced when I type and I still can't log in using KDM.
