The graphical login manager, I don't know what it's called, doesn't accept any keyboard input. The display comes up with the user icons, the mouse works - so I can select an icon, the keyboard doesn't work - so I can't enter a password. I have X configured as I need it for users, if I start up a boot to stop at init 3, then log in, then do startx, then all is well. -- Colin Murphy - QL.4.Ever@bigfoot.com - ICQ# 13630409 A GLLUG Greater London Linux User Group organiser, for the 'mo. http://gllug.linux.co.uk
As soon as you see the graphical login manager, hit <esc>. You will then get the normal text-base manager. This is explained somewhere on the graphical screen -- :=) On Saturday 31 March 2001 19:15, Colin Murphy wrote:

Cll - That would be the graphical boot manager, which I also don't know the name of. No, I am quite happy with that - though I am happier with the text version, how do I get this by default. What are the differences between 'Linux'and 'Suse' boot prompts? -- Colin Murphy - QL.4.Ever@bigfoot.com - ICQ# 13630409 A GLLUG Greater London Linux User Group organiser, for the 'mo. http://gllug.linux.co.uk
My apologies to the group -- I confused the Kdm login manager with Suse's graphical frontend to lilo. To change graphical lilo to text lilo, I notice /etc/lilo.conf has two items which I don't know the function of: append="BOOT_FILE=/boot/vmlinuz" and menu-scheme=Wg:kw:Wg:Wg Perhaps by removing these lines and then re-running lilo you will get the text-based version -- On Monday 02 April 2001 08:19, Colin Murphy wrote:

Are you sure it doesn't accept input? I'm runing Xfree4 and kde 2.1 on a Nvidia card , QT-experimental and antialias. The kdm login don't show anything when I type the password but I click go and off it goes.

the keyboard doesn't work - so I can't enter a password.
It is possible that you are entering the password, but that in file /opt/kde2/share/config/kdmrc, the line "EchoMode=" is set to "EchoMode=NoStars". Change this to "EchoMode=OneStar" and you will see 1 asterisk for each character in your password. I think this can be set to ThreeStars also, but I have never tried it. This made my pulse race a little faster, until I edited kdmrc to produce 'OneStar'. Alas, no stars are produced when I type and I still can't log in using KDM. How do I stop KDM appearing by default, I'd be quite happy just to have a text log in. -- Colin Murphy - QL.4.Ever@bigfoot.com - ICQ# 13630409 A GLLUG Greater London Linux User Group organiser, for the 'mo. http://gllug.linux.co.uk

I am not quite sure in 7.1, but in 7.0 and earlier you set text mode login by editing /etc/inittab: Change the line id:3:initdefault: to id:2:initdefault: Maybe someone else can jump in here because I seem to remember reading somewhere that the init run levels changed with 7.1. I seem to remember that runlevel 3 is for the text logon. You could use yast1, find the configuration file : /etc/rc.config and change the variable 'DISPLAYMANAGER' to 'console' .that's what I did for me. hope this helps.
