I've had that problem in the past as well Fred. I read a few threads on the list here, and one of them mentioned that you need to fire up xcdroast as root and configure both the device, and user access. It's worked for me as a normal user after having done that.

You lucky devil! <G> xcdroast won't even acknowledge I have a burner when run from root ...which means I never get the chance to tell it a user can also burn. :-\
I wonder if the problem lies in kernel support for your dvd-cdrw drive. Which means googling for your drive under Linux might be interesting, in what results show what kind of config it runs under.
