Better off ordering 9.2, as it's the MOST heavily "hammered" release yet, but a LOT more hardware support. I'd get the Pro. Upgrade release.

'Sure does, and I hope that these issues are FINALLY taken care of in 9.2. I've a client with a NEW HP box that I CAN'T get XCDRoast to bun a CD as a user....ONLY as Root. It simply DOES "take an act of Congress" way too often to get CD burners to work properly for users FROM THE GET GO, that is in install "out of the box." Fred, have you tried k3b??? 9.1 had it run "out of the box" w/o needing root privs... IIRC ( I may not, it was a while ago when I installed that stuff) -- j -- nemo me impune lacessit
Have you gone to setup in Xcdroast to allow users to burn cds. Generally xcdroast only allows root to do it. There is an option to allow different users to do it. You need to be root first to enable it. Once you do it, xcdroast can be used by anyone. Fred Miller wrote:

Sometimes yes, and most often no! I never know from one install to the next if it's going to work or not. The problems ALL stem from permissions NOT being set properly from the get go......I think. I've done the same install on IDENTICAL hardware on the SAME day, and NEVER will I get even most boxen to be able to burn CDs as user. This is an example of what MUST be fixed before Linux and SUSE can move MickySoft OFF the desktop. I have tried k3b as root & user; xcdroast won't even completely load as root & I never get to the part allowing me to chown the damned thing ...or whatever it is called. -- "Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio

I've had that problem in the past as well Fred. I read a few threads on the list here, and one of them mentioned that you need to fire up xcdroast as root and configure both the device, and user access. It's worked for me as a normal user after having done that. Mike

You lucky devil! <G> xcdroast won't even acknowledge I have a burner when run from root ...which means I never get the chance to tell it a user can also burn. :-\ -- "Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio

I wonder if the problem lies in kernel support for your dvd-cdrw drive. Which means googling for your drive under Linux might be interesting, in what results show what kind of config it runs under.

Actually, I think it is finally figured out. Something about a resmgr something-or-other. Used to work, then didn't work, now works. Many thanks for the input. :-) -- "Yogi" CH Namasté Yoga Studio
Make sure you get cdrecord as part of your rm. Xcderoast uses it and if I remember correctly it is not loaded by default. C Hamel wrote:

Read what I said, and for further clarification, the problem is that MOST installs DON'T allow a user to burn a CD, but do allow root to burn a CD. OFTEN, I've not been able to fix the setup so that a user can burn a CD, and it doesn't make a rats ass bit of difference what software you use to burn a CD with. -- "Running Windows on a Pentium is like getting a Porsche but only being able to drive it in reverse with the handbrake on."

'Sometimes yes, and sometimes no. :) It really depends on if Yast feels like doing the install correctly that day on that hardware. Once done, I may or may not get XCDRoast to work as a user.
