There is nothing at the bottom left (or anywhere else on the screen) except the login fields and a message window. I tried left and right clicking at various places to no avail.
It doesn't look like he is using kdm as his display manager.
Enter YAST, System, etc/sysconfig Editor, scroll down to Desktop - Display Manager and see if KDM is loading. There should be several selections, console (my choice since I don't use X), kdm, gdm (gnome), xdm & wdm.
Let us know what is there.
Was xdm, changed to kdm and restarted. I now get the familiar SuSE login screen and the Session Type in lower left BUT kde is not one of the choices, it defaults to fvwm. The default (which I set to kde in /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager) still comes up fvwm. It may be simpler to reinstall! Thank you, Lucky
