There is nothing at the bottom left (or anywhere else on the screen) except the login fields and a message window. I tried left and right clicking at various places to no avail.
It doesn't look like he is using kdm as his display manager. Enter YAST, System, etc/sysconfig Editor, scroll down to Desktop - Display Manager and see if KDM is loading. There should be several selections, console (my choice since I don't use X), kdm, gdm (gnome), xdm & wdm. Let us know what is there. Cheers, ~James

Dear James, Having a similar problem I followed this question with interest. I have no problem starting with KDE after boot but due to the fact that I want to use a less cpu hungry desktop I often leave KDE and after gaining access to the image with the choices I have to choose console because my second choice Icewm is not among the choices. Sometimes I go direct to console from KDE with ctrl alt bkspce. I looked into Yast but there seems no place to enter Icewm into the possible choices. So where is this list of choices kept in order to do adjust this list by hand.

Was xdm, changed to kdm and restarted. I now get the familiar SuSE login screen and the Session Type in lower left BUT kde is not one of the choices, it defaults to fvwm. The default (which I set to kde in /etc/sysconfig/windowmanager) still comes up fvwm. It may be simpler to reinstall! Thank you, Lucky

It may be simpler to reinstall! First check to see if KDE is installed. YaST/Install and Remove Softwate Select selections from then pull down, and check if KDE desktop was installed.
