Yes, it actually was taint, not corrupt. I was paraphrasing rather than quoting. And it further said that the failure could be owing to incorrect irq / io which don't help me a lot because it's got to co-exist with winxp cuz that's all that Joe cares about ( as yet :-)

Corrupt? What exactly did it say? Could it have said "taint"?
If it said "taint", that is not an error message. That's just a very childish message from the kernel developers, and all it means is that the driver you're trying to install isn't licensed under the GPL.
