Yes, that's an example of the different sets of symptoms. You see your problem as arising from the hotplug update (I think?) whereas in my case I have never been able to mount these USB devices. I also tried Mandrake 10, and cannot mount with that either. My pet theory of the moment is that there is something in the 2.6 kernel or its modules that is not working right, as well as the submount- and hotplug-specific issues.
