-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Does anyone know whether anything active is being done to fix the problems many of us are having with USB and hotplug in 9.1? The last fix (around 5th August?) seemed to do the trick for many, but myself and others still seem to be unable to use USB memory sticks and cameras. There seems to be more than one set of symptoms, too (like some can mount outwith subfs and other (me!) find their system locks if they try to do that). If there is anyone working on this, I'd be happy to try helping with testing. And I could perhaps supply more diagnostic information if that would help. It's a pain having to reboot into SuSE 9.0 just to access these things, and I want to upgrade my mother's PC (from 7.3) just as soon as this gets sorted out. The latest rounds of upgrades have addressed the problem for me, including hotplug: hotplug-0.44-32.22 HTH. -- Cheers, Trey Famous last words: (1) "Don't worry, I can handle it." Yes, that's an example of the different sets of symptoms. You see your problem as arising from the hotplug update (I think?) whereas in my case I have never been able to mount these USB devices. I also tried Mandrake 10, and cannot mount with that either. My pet theory of the moment is that there is something in the 2.6 kernel or its modules that is not working right, as well as the submount- and hotplug-specific issues. Mine works to perfection now. You might consider throwing som HW info in the air. I have an Asus P4C800E-Deluxe board and a Traveler DC-5300 digital camera. And updates include all the latest from YOU Johan

Go back to auto drop subfs. I dropped it on my backup box for the CDRW and no problems since then. CWSIV

My DVD and CDRW devices are working fine with subfs. For USB devices, switching from subfs to auto is supposed to mean set HOTPLUG_USE_SUBFS to no. I tried that, put a line in fstab that says the filesystem is auto, and tried to mount. The mount command just hangs and at shutdown hda7 cannot be unmounted! This is worse than when using subfs, because then I at least get a tidy error message and no after-effects. Again, there seem to be multiple symptoms with different solutions working for different people. Hi This is a follow-up to my previous postings re problems mounting a couple of USB devices on Suse 9.1: an MP3 player / memory stick and a camera. I've done some more digging around and have found some interesting things out about the MP3 player. According to Suse 9.0, the MP3 "disk" is partitioned as follows: /dev/sda 61.9MB 0 1006 /dev/sda1 60.4MB 0 982 The sda1 partition is reported to be FAT12. I have read that the 2.6 kernel has improved support for FAT12, but I cannot help wondering whether this is the problem? Mind you, as the camera is FAT16, this is probably a red herring. Also odd is that the MP3 player is supposedly 65MB (so the messages say when I plugged it in) - I presume the extra 4 or 5 MB is where the MP3 player software sits. But does linux 2.6 realise that? There are interesting messages when the device is plugged in: linux /etc/hotplug/usb.agent[6816]: need a device for this command linux kernel: usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using address 3 linux kernel: usb 1-1: Product: NOMAD MuVo linux kernel: usb 1-1: Manufacturer: Creative Tech linux kernel: usb 1-1: SerialNumber: 000000000000 linux kernel: scsi1 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices linux kernel: Vendor: CREATIVE Model: NOMAD_MUVO Rev: 0001 linux kernel: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02 linux /etc/hotplug/usb.agent[6929]: need a device for this command linux kernel: SCSI device sda: 126977 512-byte hdwr sectors (65 MB) linux kernel: sda: assuming Write Enabled linux kernel: sda: assuming drive cache: write through linux kernel: sda:end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 126976 linux kernel: Buffer I/O error on device sda, logical block 126976 linux /etc/hotplug/block.agent[6994]: new block device /block/sda Linux seems to be trying to doing something with sector 126976, which seems to be somewhere up by 65MB, ie beyond what Suse 9.0 is saying is written in the partition table. But again, the camera is different: the log has no errors in it when I plug the camera in. So again this may be a red herring. Do these observations suggest any causes / solutions to anyone? Thanks Steve Dundee, UK
Hi Sorry to keep harping on about my USB / Mass Storage Device woes, but this is another follow-up to my previous postings re problems mounting a couple of USB devices on Suse 9.1: an MP3 player / memory stick and a camera. I tried them on someone else's Suse 9.1 set up, which was on a quite new laptop (sorry - not sure what make/model). They didn't work there, either, so I conclude that the problem is support for these two devices rather than anything to do with my (oldish) PC. Just thought I'd pass this on in case anyone is listening to the list who is involved in kernel 2.6 USB mass storage device mounting. I'm thinking this is maybe not the right list for this (esp. as I get the same problem using Mandrake 10 on this PC). Anyone suggest a more suitable list? Thanks Steve Dundee, UK
