On the ThinkPad R61, there is a button on the extreme left of the armrest panel facing towards you-this toggles wireless radio on/off. Perhaps this is what you were looking for? YMMV, but look for a similar button in your model of TP.
I've got a couple of R51e models, and I don't see any such button. I think the switch on/off wifi is done with the blue Fn+<otherkey>.
