Maybe the permissions are set wrongly on your /dev/tty device. As far as I can remember you must have rw permissions to it. Have you tried to download the photos as root?
I just tried running digikam as root, and still get the same message: Camera Error : Failed to initialize camera. Please ensure camera is connected properly and turned on Could not transmit packet even after several retries. When I click on the camera icon to start downloading the pics, I can see a little 'arrow' in the window of the camera blinking on and off...like it's downloading the pics to my system, but after about 15 seconds, I get the above message. Thanks for the help, please don't give up yet if you have any other ideas.
