Your 'fine point' is way off point. There was no Israel (or Israelis) in that time period. The earlier Kingdom of Israel was long gone and a persistent nation by that name did not reappear until the 20th century. The Jewish Nation was Judea, and during Jesus' lifetime it was the Roman Province of Judea. Yes, I know it says 'Israel' in your modern PC-edited English-language version of the Gospels and such, but your book is (gasp!) wrong.
