Although this is only a change to the default setting of a radio button, my worry is that this could be the thin end of the wedge and I really would prefer *not* to be forced to install KDE (which I no longer use) so that I can install something that I want to use. I have no desire to start a religious war on this, but choice of preferred desktop is an important feature of the Linux experience, and marginalising desktops other than KDE would a worrying development.
Thank you for the insight, Bjarne, but please start a new thread on that topic and do no hijack this one. Thanks!
Bjarne!? Oh well, here we go again.. FYI Below is quote by Bjarne Stroustrup one of (if not the) creator(s) of C++... On a more pertinent note, one also needs to consider those who voted with their feet... KDE is based on the QT GUI API and before I decided to invest time in trying to get KDE 4 going in a way usable for me, I took a little look at the things I use and what they used and found following... Open Office .. largely GTK based Eclipse .. GTK based Mozilla (Firefox/Thunderbird) GTK based SUN JDK/SDK GTK based MySQL admin tools GTK based and the list goes on... The only thing I used on a regular basis that was QT based was konqueror as a file browser. (I am not impressed by dolphin). This was largely mitigated by mc and the discovery that Nautilus no longer did crazy things on my setups. The few other KDE things I use on occasional basis had GTK or X based alternative. KDE AFAIK is the only QT based desktop, and there are rather a lot of non-QT based desktops. So I realised that it it did not make much sense for me install KDE or the QT libraries or invest time in setting up KDE4 (YMMV). BTW Using GTK based apps on 3.x did not produce any major issues for me, but I suspect that the synchronising of KDE4 visual themes with presentation of GTK based apps may cause those who care about those things some problems. If this has not been addressed already it probably needs to be. PS There is now a further factor to consider. When Nokia acquired Trolltech hence QT, it was not to get a foothold in the PC based Open Source market place (it was more likely part of a strategic response to the potential threat posed by android, and the need to update the Symbian OS GUI). Nokia are largely indifferent to Open Source based development and its community, (and can afford to be as Open Source based development in of handset applications is marginal). In some ways Nokia can make M$ seem positively cuddly...., and Nokias relative silence about the future of QT outside of their core market is probably more of a cause of concern than if they had said anything. - -- ============================================================================== I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
