Why would they take away something useful that's been around for years?
This is the upstream pattern ever since it abandoned KDE3 to rewrite everything from scratch with QT4 for KDE4, then again with QT5 for KDE5. When new people replace retired people and start from scratch, they commonly lack the wisdom and/or initiative that went into the retired feature in the first place, and save themselves the work of understanding its value and recreating it. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
